First off I will disclose that I am the proprietor of a B&B in the La Ropa area so you know that my opinions might be biased.

I live here year around and walk around and live life much as I did in the U.S. (Seattle). There is definitely violence happening in the area but it is almost exclusively being carried out between those who are involved in the drug trade. As long as you don't plan on getting involved with any of that you and your family should be just fine.

As far as an activity based vacation, I personally find the Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo area an ideal area for all kinds of activities year around. There is of course all of beach/ocean activities from boogie boarding, snorkeling, scuba diving, paragliding, fishing, etc. It will be warm, but getting into the ocean will be a nice way to cool off. I personally favor the beaches inside Zihuatanejo bay and I think La Ropa is the best for swimming, especially for younger kids.

Other great activities in the area include hiking, cycling, nature walks and many others. Taking a walk in the areas immediately surrounding Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo can be a joy as you observe all that nature here has to offer.

There will be fewer restaurants open during that time but there will still be many options available to you so don't be too worried about that.

Shameless plug--You may be interested in what our small B&B has to offer. Though we don't have an activities center my partner and I will be happy to provide extensive guidance during your stay. We have bicycles, snorkel gear, boogie boards and other things available for rent for your stay and we can help you find the best places to go while here. We have a pool and we only have 2 rooms in our small B&B. I hope you will check us out at our website.

Buena Suerte!
