Folks beware. There is money to be made in phoney tequila. The attached articles indicate it is happening on a fairly large scale. They also point out that there are health consequences. Do what you can to make sure you know what you are getting.

Fake tequila is not necessarily tainted alcohol but an alcoholic beverage like tequila but not made in the appellation " Under Mexican law, in order for a spirit to be labeled as tequila it can only be produced in specific regions of Mexico using only one type of agave, Agave Tequilana Weber Blue Variety Mayahuel, commonly known as the Blue Agave. Originally, the legal growing region was in the state of Jalisco, but over the years the government has extended that to include some counties in the states of Michoacán, Guanajuato, Nayarit, and Tamaulipas.

These areas encompassing 180 municipalities in the five states are the only areas in the world that can produce tequila.'

That being said, do not expect happy hour margaritas to have real tequila.

You are exactly right! Most of wat is called "fake tequila" is NOT like what we call "fake news". It is likely still made from agave, which means technically it still qualifies as a mezcal, and it is unlikely to cause anyone to go blind or become ill except of course from abuse. This will be the cheap stuff in the plastic bottle that alkies, kids and poor folks buy. Just like buying generic soft drinks. After working in Florida restaurants and bars and seeing what cheap crap is often used for house brands, I never order a mixed drink without inquiring what brand of alcohol is used. Even the new bar next to Coconuts called Havana Mojito doesn't even have a bottle of Cuban rum on the premises. When we asked what rum they used they couldn't tell us offhand. I won't be recommending that bar until I see some Havana Club stocked on their shelves. ;-)
:vacation: Saludos.
