Just heard a story on CBC radio today about the shocking trade in "chuparosas", described as "love charms", made using dead hummingbirds. While these awful things may be popular in other countries, the story dealt with the trade in Mexico, where they are apparently sold in markets, and often in stores selling herbal remedies. Prices for the "charms" are reportedly in the 250-300 peso range and presumably promise a successful, exciting lovelife for the wearer. Since the numbers of hummingbirds worldwide are in decline, the last thing the species needs is to be targeted for production of these primitive, grisly monstrosities. We hope we don't come across any in Zihua.
