I will not jump on your bandwagon about the bars as I know the owners of at least 6 and they are quite responsible and obey all the rules about late night music. The only unruly ones I have ever seen are pretty obviously connected to the cartels. The sad lack of a local police presence is clearly a problem though.

Bars have clients who often drink to excess, and bar owners could care less what they do when they leave. It’s we residents who pay the factura and clean up the broken plates, as we say in Spanish. Urine and vandalism and loud cars and loud people. Not exactly the Zihuatanejo I fell in love with, but rather typical of every place where tourism is the economic foundation. I’ll never forget my dear mother-in-law asking me with a little glint in her eye (because she was originally a Sonoran who are typically well-educated and bilingual) what motherfugger meant, and I asked her why, and she said because two gringos were fighting drunk in the street screaming it back and forth at each other in the middle of the night. That was 20 or so years ago when there were still only a handful of bars and everything closed at midnight. Things have only deteriorated much further since then. So it’s not just “narco bars” or locals. It’s the entire alcohol culture.
