I'm no historian but I'm pretty sure no one distilled pulque and nothing like mezcal or tequila was available until the distillation process was introduced by Europeans.

Also, all tequila is mezcal, but only when it's from Tequila, Jalisco is it actually tequila (I don't care what the government or so-called authorized producers say). From anywhere else it simply is not tequila by definition.

And then they give a margarita recipe sure to ruin any decent tequila. Tequila is for sipping straight.
