Back Road to Puebla

Hi all. We are planning a road trip to Oaxaca by way of Taxco and Puebla. It is possible to get from Taxco to Puebla by way of the outskirts of Mexico City, but it appears there is a shortcut, road 438D. Google maps says it's a good hour faster and it's always nice to avoid Mexico City traffic.

Does anyone have experience with this road? It looks OK on paper (even a toll road?), but with Mexico you never know ...

Any help will be greatly appreciated.

Drove the road from Cuernavaca to Cuautla to Cholula back when they had just opened the brand new highway to Puebla that was a straight shot from Cholula and completely devoid of urban sprawl back then. Probably a bit more congested these days, but it sure was a fun drive around the perimeter of that incredibly massive volcano.
