Looking for a life

Make your fortune in Canada and them move to MX. Oh, you also should consider a few Spanish lessons while accumulating your cash.

To me that would've been terrible advice. But then I always knew I'd rather be a poor man in the tropics than a rich man up north. I'd rather enjoy my life in a place like Zihuatanejo even if I had to struggle to make a living. No offense, but even though I had a terrific life with a good job, 401k and a promising future before coming here, every day of my life here is the best day of my life, and I have no regrets about anything I left behind. I'm not waiting to retire to enjoy myself. I've enjoyed myself my entire life living my own dream in one tropical paradise after another and following my own heart. I would've missed all that and probably be in jail or the mental ward for not conforming had I followed the path you suggest. I surely avoided some terrible fate. Working until I retired to enjoy myself in paradise would've been a life wasted and not well lived.

"I get the feeling that this is the last time in history when the offbeats like me will have a chance to live free in the nooks and crannies of the huge and rigid structure of an increasingly codified society. Fifty years from now I would be hunted down in the street. They would drill little holes in my skull and make me sensible and reliable and adjusted."
Travis McGee from "The Quick Red Fox" (1964) John D. MacDonald
