International driver's permit update

I travel throughout Europe frequently and though you are correct that the IDP is technically required in EU countries, I’ve never been asked to show it. When I first rented a car in Italy, I presented it, but the rental agent told me that my license and passport was all I needed. After that I let my IDP lapse (typically good for 1 year). Now I just show my license and passport and no problems. My suggestion would be to just try and rent the car. I have a US drivers license. The worst they can say is no. But my sense is that you will get the car and be able to go to the wine festival that sounds pretty awesome.
