Some aspects of local life remain little changed over the decades. Like many longtime residents, my wife and I still enjoy walking along the waterfront and greeting our friends, many who are fishermen, shopkeepers, restaurant owners and workers, and even the sailors and the construction workers at the pier. This is a tradition most downtown residents have enjoyed for generations. The life and traditions of the fishermen is similar to what it also was generations ago. For all our warts we still appreciate the lifestyle we're able to enjoy, a lifestyle that allows us to remain close to the sea and close to the community as well as to see the tourists of mostly Mexican families and foreigners in couples who come and go and enjoy themselves in brief visits. Every now and then we spot a familiar face or someone we haven't seen in years, if not decades. But so many things about Zihuatanejo remain constant like the weather, the ocean, the sweet fruit, the fresh seafood, the warm people. Thank goodness for the constants!

Thanks to our dear friend Gene "Cri-Cri" Lysaker (qepd) for this old photo of downtown Zihuatanejo and El Cerro Viejo from around 1970.
