by HansMpls, Minneapolis, Tuesday, February 11, 2020, 12:10 (151 days ago)

Day 1
Sun Country #529 MSP to Zih 1:15pm arrival - Minneapolis has been locked into gray skies for more than 10 days. $520 peso taxi to Aura Del Mar and Francisco checks us in with an ice cold bienvenidos Victoria. Room #3 overlooking the pool with floral decorations on the bed with a "Welcome Home" message. 20 minutes later we are seated at Valeria on Madera with a cerveza for me and mango margarita for my wife Molly. Follow that up with tiritas, Hornitos, and mas cervezas. Jorge joins us for a few as well. Back at Aura, a pool swim, then I procure a bottle of Chardonay and a 6 pack of Modelo from the tienda La Rena across the street for the mini fridge in the room. Sunset and zzz.....
Day 2
8:30am free breakfast at Bistro Del Mar - coffee, eggs, and perfect orange juice. La Perla on La Ropa by 10:45 - still not early enough to get front row chairs but the view from row 2 is exceptional. Norwegian Gem cruise ship pulled into the bay and dropped anchor. Local navy patrol boat anchored nearby and then a military helicopter made a number of low altitude loops around the bay and the cruise ship. Shrimp tacos at La Perla back to Aura around 3:30pm - showers, shopping in Centro, belts and new guitar strap at Mario's, flip flops and board shorts at Silver Surf. Dinner at La Lonja on Adelita: Onion Soup and the Vacio Cut - get this - don't ask any questions - it's spectacular!!!
Day 3
Fresh coffee in the room and great wi-fi to check emails from the patio. It's pool side today at Aura on the upper deck overlooking Madera. Fortunado is our waiter for the day - One Fearful Yellow Eye Travis McGee / John D. MacDonald is the book for this trip. No love for Chicago in this one. 6:00 Dinner reservation at Il Mare - my favorite view of the bay. Carmel Crepes at Puerto Del Sol, Jazz with Patricia and a visit with Gabby.
Day 4
9:15am meet Thierry - Carlo Scuba at the old pier dock. Capitan Chilolo takes us over to Las Gatas and we dive The Rock in front of the bay. Decent visibility around 25' of distance, dove down to 90' and saw a shark for the first time. 2nd Dive in the cove just to the south of the bay - eels, rays, sea turtle, and schools of fish no deeper than 35'. This is year 16 for me with Thierry - did open water certification with him in 2004 - top notch operation. Dinner at La Gula, the balcony view over Adelita and the hillside is another special place.
Day 5
Another pool day at Aura - lazy. Walked the beach a little bit and the usual transaction with The Cheese Man. Watched the first half of Super Bowl #54 beach side at Valeria near the Museo and 2nd half at Bandido's.
Day 6
Breakfast at Bistro Del Mar, and good byes delivered to Rosalva and the other staff members at Aura. We love it there - 5 stars all around for this hotel. Taxi cab to Troncones and we commence with the 2nd half of this trip at the Inn at Manzanillo Bay. This time we are staying in an upper unit above the office - #9. Dinner at Eden, wood fired pizza medatarano is spectacular.

2nd half details to come later....
