Temporary resident to Permanent

I'm sorry if this has been covered before..but here goes, anyway. We are heading back to Canada THIS Thursday and have flights booked to come back here at the end of September. We have to be here, probably at LEAST two weeks before our Temporary residency runs out, to start the paperwork for the Permanent residency. Does anyone know if, due to Covid 19, there is any leeway to that? I am concerned that if we decide we will be better off staying in Canada longer..we would lose out chance for the permanent residency and have to start again. IF that WERE to happen, do you need to start absolutely RIGHT at the beginning or what? Just considering options, we do want to come back well in time, but jumping from the frying pan into the fire might not make sense to our children.
