FeliZIHdades a Don Porfirio

As of today Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 1,162 confirmed cases of Covid-19, 81 that resulted in fatalities, 39 that are currently active, and 977 that have recovered.

Today is the birthday of Mexico's greatest president, Don Porfirio Díaz who was born on this day in 1830. It's because today is his birthday that we celebrate El Grito de Dolores aka El Grito la Independencia this evening instead of tomorrow so that the two celebrations could be combined while he was Mexico's president.

Since there is no parade tomorrow, I don't have to get up at 6:00 A.M. to move the car. Hell, that's reason enough to celebrate right there!

Our mayor is apparently intent on ignoring our calls by hundreds of citizens NOT to remodel or otherwise pave over more of our downtown beach. He believes we are in competition with Acapulco, Cancún, Los Cabos and Vallarta. He doesn't understand that the people who come here choose Zihuatanejo precisely because it isn't like those places and because it conserves some of its original and rustic ambiance. If we pretend to compete with them, we can only lose by losing our own unique identity and trying to be something we aren't. Of course what can we expect from a politician with a cement business who, unlike most of us opposing the remodeling of the waterfront, doesn't have decades of experience living off of tourism?

We enjoyed another day of absolutely perfect weather today. Man oh man are we lucky!
