La PreservaZIHón de Un Paraíso

As of today Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 1,353 confirmed cases of Covid-19, 100 that have resulted in fatalities, 41 that are currently active, and approximately 1,124 that have recovered. While we haven't seen what I would call a spike, we did see a bump in the number of cases locally that seemed to reflect the loosened restrictions and celebrations that occured around the date of the Día de Independencia. However, compared to three weeks ago, the numbers from two weeks ago reflect a decrease in the incidences of the virus, so hopefully the bump was just an anomaly and not a continuing trend.

I saw a diagram today of the new monster hotel that is planned, but in the digital rendering it looked like it was located at Playa Manzanillo, not Riscalillo as I had originally been led to believe. This is simply a monument to corruption. Such destruction of one of our local treasures as is Playa Manzanillo and its coral formations cannot be justified even if the hotel were able to be full year round, which we know it won't be. It will offer the same TODO INCLUIDO as the hotels that are already killing business for the centros comerciales in Ixtapa and cheapening our destination, bringing no real income for the shop owners, tour guides and restaurants who used to be able to make a decent living from our tourists when we had tourists with purchasing power. Where are the environmentalists? Where are the folks concerned about losing an environmental treasure and increasing our hotel offer when we already can't fill the lodgings we currently offer? Damned disappointing.

Early morning on the Playa Principal where sea turtle tracks are visible if you look closely.
