As of today Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 1,498 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (3 more than yesterday), 115 that have resulted in fatalities, 5 that are currently active, and approximately 1,277 that have recovered. We'll have to wait a couple of weeks to know if this past weekends' tourism causes a spike in local cases. The local authorities appear to have allowed things to get out of hand by not enforcing the wearing of facemasks or social distancing.

While our local weather continues mild and perfect with mostly cloudless skies, parts of Campeche, Chiapas, Tabasco, Quintana Roo and Veracruz are suffering the effects of excessive rains and here comes cat 5 Hurricane Iota. Rivers are overflowing, dams have had to be opened, agriculture has been ruined, cattle and farm animals have drowned, and there are people who have been living on their rooftops for several weeks now. I've seen very little of this reported in the U.S. media, so I thought I'd bring it to your attention since it is a major concern for us here in Mexico.

The mar de fondo seems to have subsided. We don't appear to have suffered any beach erosion in our part of the bay, don't know about La Ropa or outside the bay. The tourists have all returned home, and Zihuatanejo is once more a sleepy little fishing town. The peaceful nights downtown are something the residents are all extremely grateful for.

Local downtown residents remain perplexed by the local government's insistence on ruining our waterfront to pour cement over more of the beach area. Everything they have dug up, including the zócalo and the plaza by the museum as well as by the Mercado de Conchas, reveals how much beach area has already been covered up with cement and construction. At this pace in a couple more decades there won't be any beach left.

If you feel like coming back to LIFE in our precious paradise, please keep in mind all our wonderful lodgings that I can personally vouch for as being reliable and trustworthy. Troncones is one place that is perfect for those seeking the ultimate escape from stress, where a traffic jam is a foreign concept.
