What if you test positive?

The main gist of the comments to you were highly accurate. Ever since last March Canadians were advised to avoid non-essential travel. Back then, the goal posts were moving dynamically as health professionals learned more about the virus, death tolls rose, and spread via travel of new variants increased. If you were comfortable with volatility and decided to travel anyways, the reality is that government policy might change in response to the situation and you might be out of luck. The lesson is that an emergency doesn't provide a lot of warning, much like hiking an active volcano. You know that there's a risk and that you might be in the wrong place at the wrong time, but that could have been avoided by staying away in the first place. And if you don't get the sympathy that you think that you deserve, well that might be a bit too much for some folks to offer, I guess.
