As of today, since April 18, 2020 Zihuatanejo has registered a cumulative total of 2,429 confirmed cases of Covid-19 (1 more than yesterday), 194 that have resulted in fatalities, 4 that are currently active, and approximately 2,081 that have recovered. While it looks like we seem to have this thing under control, let's not forget that lots of people never go to a doctor or the hospital due to a lack of trust, time and/or money, and that we don't do the massive random testing here that has been going on in other nations, so our stats are not going to measure the same as other nations. Our high death rate has more to do with the poor health of too many people and the low test rate than with anything else. For at least two decades now locals have been clamoring for two main things from our local and state politicians that they have not delivered on: a new hospital and public security. The latter has received some attention mostly from the federal government thanks to the Guardia Nacional, but no one has done more than make empty promises about our need for a new modern hospital. No one here ever asked for a "ciclovía" or the "remodelación del Paseo del Pescador". Those were projects imposed upon us primarily for the benefit of certain politicians.

Last night the thunder and lightning encircled us and put on a rather spectacular show, but it never rained in downtown Zihuatanejo, so the heat continues and the loss of shade trees to provide cooling breezes during the day remains inexplicable, unforgiveable and unforgotten.

Lupita and I love this retrato of Los Hermanos Morelos that was originally suggested by Lupita.
