The challenge in focusing on numbers is that the numbers are inherently unreliable. Since only those with symptoms are tested, you would expect the percentage of positive tests to be higher. In Washington state some of the clinics will only test symptomatic patients now, because of shortage of personnel and tests.
Hospitalizations could be a bit more reliable, but it’s my understanding that people in Mexico are much less likely to go to the hospital.
It’s pretty typical for us to want to put a number on things, but in this case all of the data is pretty squishy, so any result is not likely to be very accurate. Suffice it to say there’s a ton of omicron, which seems to be less serious and may be about to start decreasing.
