Alternative Accommodations in Zihuatanejo

Yes, there are two separate apartments available for rent on the first level of the house. The owner lives upstairs in larger quarters. The leafy property has a front gate that is kept locked. Renters have a key. Both apartments have deadbolts locks on the front door. Also, another security apparatus is the ability to lock a separate (metal) mesh door to the bedroom, on top of the standard wooden bedroom door. Great for storing valuables, computers, etc. while you're out.

The area/neighborhood is safe. The people are friendly--if you speak to them. Otherwise, they'll just curiously observe or leave you alone. Zihuatanejo is not as touristy as some other parts of Mexico but the people there are very accustomed to foreigners. (Speaking some Spanish (which I do) is a big plus!) But, again, I didn't have any problems. In fact, I walked back and forth from the apartment to Centro day and night without a problem--a distance of about 6 blocks as the crow flies. I took a cab (available everywhere for about 25 pesos) back to the apartment only when I was out beyond midnight. For a woman, however, I do not recommend walking back from Centro much beyond 9pm. Prudence dictates safety first!

BTW, while I was there, a woman renter was my neighbor in the other apartment, if that helps ease your concern. Finally, I forgot to mention in my original post that each apartment is also equipped with a two burner, gas-fed table top range for cooking.
