It's available literally everywhere, from Comercial Mexicana to the tourist shops on Calle 5 de Mayo.

The best place I know is inside the Mercado Municipal. There is a coffee merchant that has pure vanilla as well as whole beans. They are near or in the fruit section and it is a good size space.

Old thread, but new question:
A friend has asked us to pick up some vanilla. Not being a cook, I figured she wants some vanilla extract - the dark stuff. I bought a 250 ml bottle of Orlando "Aged Premium Vanilla." The sales lady said it came in clara, media clara or oscura. I paid 80 pesos for the oscura.
(Now I find my friend wants a liter!)
Reading the list of ingredients, it sure doesn't sound very "pure":
--purified water
--vanilla extract
--cane alcohol
--vanillin
--propylene glycol
--natural caramel colour
Does this sound like the vanilla we all know and love?

(And now that I think of it, $5.50 Canadian for a 250 ml/8.5 oz bottle doesn't sound all that cheap to me. What's it cost back home?)

IF you can find it, you really want some that doesn't have propylene glycol in it.

Ya, that's antifreeze, isn't it?

Yup

I Googled it and found 'way more info than I ever wanted to know about vanilla. I can distill it all into this: buying vanilla is a crapshoot, with little or no regulations, standards or labelling requirements. I'm guessing that like with most things in life, you get what you pay for.

Reminds me of the All In The Family skit, where Archie buys Edith a huge bottle of perfume and explains: Why would I pay a hundred bucks for a tiny little bottle, when I could get this big bottle for $5.75?

This time of year we need a little anti freeze in the northern climes. I guess thats why I'm down here.

Go to Cafe Caracol in the Mercado.
They have 100% natural Mexican Vanilla.

One poster says Cafe Caracol is next to Lupita's, another that it's in the mercado. Two branches?

Yes, there is one next door to Lupita's shop.
I believe I got mine at the Mercado, same name.
Hope my memory is correct!

I got my vanilla from the liquor store across the street from the basketball court where Lupe works. The brand is D'Lis and the ingredients are vanilla bean extract, ethyl alcohol and water. I bake a lot and prefer the clear.
