Warm Memories

We're once-a-year visitors and we couldn't make it last year so this year was both more anticipated and appreciated. Miss a year - miss a lot.

Flew Aeromexico from Toronto: Will definitely attempt to do so in the future. The price and timing were both right. Free checked bag, free meal and avoided USA and their free 'vetting.'

Still feel like we have been 'taken for a ride' after paying $460 for the airport cab especially when the return journey cost us $170 + tip.

Another great welcome at our bungalows of choice for the last 14 years but time marches on and there are new faces to meet as well as old ones.

We stay for a month so we fall into the 'on holiday' category rather than most who are in the 'living here for the winter' category. We have dinner in town every night but two, when we dine at home. A take away feast of wood fired barbeque chicken with papas and cebollas. $85, just behind the market.

We had not one disappointing meal after dining at past favourites and new-to-us restaurants. Of the new; Mestizo stood out for us and earned three visits. (We did hear that some had a long wait for food there some nights but that was not the case for us.)

Except for trips out of town (Playa Linda, Barra de Potosi, Playa Larga, La Chole) we walked everywhere. Never used a bus or taxi during our day to day adventures around town. As you walk you are constantly surrounded by the sights, sounds, sabores and smiles that make this place special.

Can't believe the contrast between the deserted Calle Adelita at 7.00 am and the same street at 7.00 pm when it is hard to find a seat at some of the restaurants. What a change from the sleepy street with few eateries 17 years ago.

During 28 days: 28 morning walks from the bomberos area to the end of the pier (must touch) and then around town with a visit to the market for bolillos and fruit. Over 20 walks to La Ropa and back with numerous walks up and down the beach. 26 walks into town for dinner then walk it off on the way home. Not 'late night' people, we were usually home by 9.00 pm and never felt unsafe or uncomfortable walking at that time.

La Chole: Returning after 4 years, we were disappointed to find that no further excavation work had been performed due to lack of funds. Still well worth a visit.

Playa Linda: Always fun to see the crocs, turtles, birds and iguanas. This year we were also lucky enough to see the Voledores de Papantla in action. What a sight and all for tips!

Barra de Potosi: Always a great day for us. The fun of getting there and, as we prefer to go there on the weekend, we enjoy watching the bus loads of Mexican visitors enjoying the water and their feasts.

As always, we realize that other than the weather it is all about the people. We enjoy 'bumping into' other visitors that we have known for years and catching up on their news. New friends that we have only met in recent years but who seem to have caught the 'bug.' Most importantly the people who live and work in Zihua and keep her in a state of readiness for when we arrive for our fix.

2018: The bungalow is booked. We'll start looking for an air fare deal sometime in September and probably look at Aeromexico first. We'll start hinting to our friends that if they have any spare pencils, paper, eye glasses etc. we can find a good home for it all. Then we'll pack a little lighter for us so we can get more of that stuff in the bag for los ninos. Selfish, but it makes us feel good. Try it, you'll like it.

See you all in February.

Thanks for that trip report, Mike! We must've passed each other during your morning walks. Yep, gotta touch the end of the pier! ;-)
