We had a great winter in Zihua and snorkeled every day at either end and the length of La Ropa and all along and around the south shore out to and including Las Gatas. We made a video with some simple snorkel directions for the bay and some highlights. The huge swarms of fish with the Moorish Idols are from Las Gatas around Christmas and New Years. The turtles are from many places. The seahorses were all taken near the stone jetty where the Las Gatas road turns to a path. The swimming iguana was out towards Las Gatas which is our favourite area to snorkel. The only company we usually encountered on the south shore were the oystermen.

Earlier this winter I asked the board about water cameras and got some good advice.Thanks. We found two Fuji XP 90 cameras and spare batteries in Zihua and they served us well including much of the video footage.

The notes from the video

All clips and photos were taken between the northern rocks of La Ropa Beach, along La Ropa and the south shore of Zihuatanejo Bay to Las Gatas. This was all done at no cost and on foot or by public transit as we pleased and with plenty of beach seating at many restaurants and many lodging choices. We very rarely had other snorkelers nearby except at Las Gatas which has a man-assisted breakwall/reef and is a well known snorkel beach with it's own water taxi for 50 Mxn pesos, return (2017). The Moorish Idols have been present around Christmas and New Year's in the large groups and all winter generally. The Pacific water quality and visibility changes greatly and there are many boats in the bay to be aware of but shore snorkeling for no cost with no guides or schedules is available. As with many places the early morning snorkeling can be very good but it is not as critical along the mostly uninhabited south shore which can be very good all day and right up to dusk in the winter months, especially with unencumbered sunsets. People earn a living with fishing and tourism boats as mentioned above and also by diving for oysters and other sea life, as well as shore fishermen to be aware of and to share the bay with at times. The iguana was a land based iguana having a swim but a first for us. The porkfish and two types of tangs were new this year and we got better video of what I think are cow nosed rays. As always we do no harm, neither feed or touch the subjects and clean the ocean as we can.

This is the most amazing video! Thank you so much! It really brought back memories! I was blessed to live at Las Gatas years ago and I used to swim from there and back daily to La Ropa. That experience was full of magical beauty as you showed in this artfully done video. It´s like being in another world full of stunning beauty and grace among so many fascinating beings enjoying life. All unseen by those above. I wish we could stop the harm being inflicted on the ocean and preserve and protect all this beauty!

I wonder if you would be so kind as to let me know your music playlist in the video...? Fantastic! I would be very grateful. You deserve so many kudos for this!

The first song is Etude #53 from Jools Holland and the rest are from Ry Cooder in collaboration with a Cuban artist Manuel Galbam from an album called Mambo Sinuendo with a latin tropical sorta surf sound. I would love to use some songs from Solo Tres, the great Zihua trio but lyrics can confuse the message.

Thanks for the music list -I'll look them up.
Also, I think Solo Tres has some really good instrumentals. As Miguel Quimiro if they can provide some for you to use. I really love that group.

AMAZING, I never knew the snorkeling was that good in the Bay. We just left Z and I am sorry I didn't see this before. When we come back for 2 weeks next year I certainly will be bringing snorkel gear. Thank You

Thank you everyone. Shooting the video and many, many hours more was truly a labour of love and I would walk down La Ropa near dusk just a smiling away having just been allowed to swim with a hundred big yellowtail surgeonfish or some rays or turtles.

What a wonderful fifteen minutes that must have taken hours to shoot! We used to snorkel from the rocks below La Casa que Canta to Playa Las Gatas but we never saw so many beautiful sights below the surface of La Bahía Zihuatanejo. Muchísimas gracias, GW, for your fantastic video. Abrazos

I really enjoyed your video while having my breakfast this morning! It is wonderful to see all of the varied sea creatures that live in our bay. I haven't snorkeled for many years but you have revived my interest in it and I will have to go out snorkeling soon as all of this is within 5 minutes of our home.
Thanks so much for sharing!

¡Mil gracias Juan y Cheryl!
This video is simply outstanding. Your YouTube channel is cool, too.
I'll definitely bring my snorkel gear with me next year.
You show lots of love in this, and the musical accompaniment is perfect.

What software do you use for editing?

Thanks again...going back to see some more...

Thank you all for the nice comments. Jane, you know I appreciated the scouting reports.

I just use the Windows moviemaker app that came loaded on my computer. It is very user friendly in dragging images and music around and captioning. It pretty much has to be user friendly for me to be able to use it!

Cameras are also very smart these days and they automatically adjust for low light in video mode. I had many productive snorkels around sunset and the cameras compensated with more light. The extra light in video mode also worked with our Sony land camera. I was getting very poorly lit photos of a woodpecker near our deck at 15 feet away in shade. When I switched to video the subject was very well lit. I am a snorkeler with a camera and many of the still shots are sceen captures. I wanted a photo record of as many species as possible for this video. So if you you have a bird or tejon in low light try the video mode. It's kinda cheating to the purists but you can win a bet with video proof as easily as a photo. Almost all of the photos have been, "lit up" and cropped using the photo software that also came with the computer. This is almost a requirement for the greener Pacific water compared to Caribbean water and has a greater effect as well. If your underwater photos aren't what you hoped for just try the auto light adjustment function.

As an example of my weak computer skills, it took me two days to remember after finally reading the very simple photo posting instructions on the forum page how to post a photo here. This photo made us so happy. We had made it our goal to clean the ocean and shore with more than a passing interest. It was very encouraging to see the new garbage cans along La Ropa and we used them a lot. When the shipwreck happened right at our water entry spot by the Rossy we got discouraged a bit. Along came Miguel with his commitment to keeping the beach and bay clean who rallied the cavalry and organized a dive and snorkel crew and dive boat from Carlos Scuba to clean the bay. There was some PHILanthropy involved in funding this effort and many large onion bags were filled with a lot of garbage and boat parts.

Thank you for the video and all the hard work that went into it. Great music choices too.
I purchased a Fuji XP80, (predecessor of the XP90 and virtually the same) because it was the cheapest point-and-shoot camera I could find, thinking I would never use the underwater function: I'm blind as a bat and snorkeling wouldn't be possible without prescription goggles. Your video is making me think I should dang the expense and go for it.

Do get a prescription mask. Unless you have a small face like I have and need a smaller mask, the cost is quite reasonable. My travel partner is legally blind without his glasses but snorkels just fine with a prescription mask.

I tried to fix your photos in your last post but they won't show up. Could it be they are visible to you because you are logged in to your account? Is there a public sharing option?

I am able to share my Google Photos by right-clicking and copying their address and using that.

I guess my photo sharing skills are not as good as I thought. Sorry for the misdirection and this huge photo from Facebook but the effort was worth recording. Rob my efforts through Google photos just wouldn't work. As an old guy I'm always tempted to blame new fangled things but in truth and at heart I know where the weakness lies.
