The entire Costa Grande is under a blanket of thick smoke. It's been many years since I've seen it this bad. Looks like a war zone where everyone lost. And it's not even May! If we actually had capable and responsible authorities they would declare a contingencia ambiental and set in process certain protocols to help minimize the potential threat to people's health.

La Ropa was also almost unbreathable. We could not see across the street! Very happy to see it dissipate and now we have just a beautiful sunny day.

I hope it lifts again today. Today is even worse than yesterday. This is very unhealthy and for folks who have lung issues, this is very dangerous.

We arrived yesterday and are on La Ropa. This is horrendous. We woke up in the middle of the night and could hardly breathe. I had to put a wet cloth over my face. My chest hurts, my eyes are stinging and my head is pounding. This will destroy our short vacation. Zihua is usually a paradise. What is going on? We were told this is s "controlled burn" Seriously? They would do this to the people who live and visit here? On one of biggest festival times of the year? We might have to leave if this continues because it is such a health hazard.

It seems like the government is not interested in tourism anymore. The decisions/actions or lack there of seem antithetical to attracting or keeping tourists. I scratch my head everyday.

That is distressing. But what about the health and enjoyment of the people who live here? It's so shameful.

The local government has entirely shirked its duties regarding locals and tourists. First, after the shooting at the bar Malkerida last week they should have imposed a toque de queda and made all the bars close at midnight. But of course they simply did nothing. With the highest degree of smoke we've possibly ever had an emergency contingencia ambiental should have been declared and protocols followed to ameliorate the problem and lessen the impact on people's health JUST LIKE THEY DO IN THE VALLEY OF MEXICO WHERE MANY OF OUR TOURISTS ARE FROM. The tourists would understand. But again. Nothing but silence from the local government and particularly the mayor who seems to operate only in campaign mode, giving out t-shirts the other day to potential voters in Ixtapa instead of visiting the scene of the worst traffic accident in the history of the region. La verdad, su comportamiento da pena ajena.

I can't imagine who or why anyone would tell you this is smoke from a controlled burn. That is simply a flat out lie. No other way to describe it.

This is the aggregate of hundreds of fires all up and down the coast and in the sierra. Some are indeed intentional as farmers burn to clear lands for planting as they have for millennia, but quite obviously many of the fires are simply out of control, such as the one that has been burning on Zihuatanejo's iconic Cerro Viejo for about a week now. Then of course there is also the trash burning at Las Gatas and in squatter neighborhoods, and oh, the bar Malkerida in Ixtapa "mysteriously" burned down last night while it was closed to investigate the shootings there last week.

Personally I believe civilian government in Zihuatanejo and really the entire state needs to be dissolved and military rule installed until organized crime is under control, but the Catch 22 is that organized crime will continue to have the upper hand until the multi-billion dollar a year black market created by the USA's and Mexico's prohibitionist laws is eliminated.

Here comes the smoke again. So if it's not from a controlled burn is it from the drought. It's quite bad, but I have been able to see across the street. Buenos noches.

Hola
We are getting it here too, in centro. I know its dark but we can usually see the mountains in the distance. Not tonight. Time to lock ourselves in the bedroom for the night and wait for the morning sea breeze to blow the smoke away.

Monday afternoon and things have steadily improved. Whether because the winds blew it all away or they stopped burning I have no idea but very grateful. I hope no one else is being subjected to it. Thanks for all the input. Interesting and highly disturbing. I hope there can be some political change or pressure but sounds like they really don't care much. Sad because this is an incredibly beautiful place and the people are really warm and lovely.
Still plan in coming as much as I can.
