Just a few more days until the Marina Armada takes control of the pier and its installations. Not a moment too soon. Except for the state government giving it a couple of emergency fix-ups, and the daily morning cleanup by Servicios Públicos, it has been totally ignored by local authorities and it shows. Unfortunately neither at the pier nor anywhere else is there any regular police presence or maintenance. Same as the rest of the Paseo del Pescador from La Madera to the pier. A damn shame and quite a disappointing performance by our municipal government.

All but 20 or so of the over 60 local police detained last week have returned to their jobs, but since they've all been disarmed they refuse to patrol the streets.

Meanwhile, locals do what they can to keep on keeping on by going about their daily affairs.

Still waiting for the rains... Just another day in paradise!

According to this article in Despertar this morning they are all gone. True?

Yes, something that should have been done years ago when they mostly failed their control and confidence testing and lost the right to bear arms in public. If inaction by the local government has had a crippling effect on local public security, then it makes sense that the federal and state governments fill in the void. I keep hoping that the mayor will resign and either name his suplente Rodrigo Campos or our friend Homero Rodríguez as his replacement or else that the federal government will dissolve our municipal government and install a provisional government, because too many folks currently aren't doing their jobs yet we're still paying millions of pesos a month for them to remain in office and on the payrolls.

I'd refuse to patrol as well.

What are they gonna do against a bad guy without at least a pistol.....pull their pecker out and yell "STOP OR I'LL SHOOT"!! :)

Too damn funny......cops without guns. That'll put the fear of God in them and straighten up things in short time.

There are plenty of ways for unarmed police to apply law and order. They shouldn't need firearms for most situations. The problem is they are so poorly paid, poorly prepared and poorly equipped to begin with and they don't have anything like health insurance or unemployment compensation, so they aren't highly motivated to start with. The mayor even said the only reason he hadn't fired the elements who didn't pass the control and confidence testing was because the city supposedly lacks the funds to pay their severance pay, even if they are fired for cause, such as not being trustworthy or not meeting the minimum criteria for the job.

YIKES!! That surely sounds like a quite the mess in all aspects that does not have a resolution coming soon enough.

Funny? U.K. cops would disagree. With the apparent exception only of Northern Ireland, they still don't carry guns in the U.K.

Do you really think that is an apt comparison Situation to Situation, or are you just trying to piss people off today?

Ouch! Subject of guns sure gets a rise out of some of you folks..... but I didn't raise it. We'd all be much better off without 'em. Until then, I guess we all have to sit idly by while elementary school guards start packin'.

Naw, I'm just looking at what the typical Euro Cop puts up with, and what a Mexico Cop may have to put up with.

I don't think that whole unarmed thing washes.

I certainly don't have the solutions to Mexico's crime problems, but doubt that arming everyone to the teeth will be among the solutions. It has been widely reported that municipal police in many areas of the country are poorly-trained at best, and essentially untrained at worst. I sympathize with anyone reluctant to patrol without weapons, when the bad guys are so well-armed, but I wonder at the wisdom of having 40, 50 or 60 armed, untrained or poorly-trained municipal police officers roaming the city. Makes me think of the New Year's Eve we were sitting at Rufo's and a truckload of municipal police drove by, firing their rifles into the air. Most of the other diners thought it was fireworks, but it wasn't.

Not that long ago lots of us used to fire weapons from our rooftops to celebrate Año Nuevo and other major holidays. It's mostly stopped in recent years, but there are still lots of folks who do so, especially in rural areas.

One New Year's my friend Dan from Coacoyul was standing outside when a bullet landed on the sidewalk 2 feet away. The following New Years we were up on the roof at Ferreteria del Centro and a bullet clanged off the Bar-B-Q. What goes up.....

Then simply Train Them.

Sending uniformed Police out to do a job in the current environment unarmed is nothing short of ridiculous.

May as well give them Clown Shoes and one of these:
