I am proud to live in Canada, as any country we have issues to resolve. I live in Winnipeg which has a large indigenous people population, we have a long way to go to improve lives, mend past history and educate.... I believe it will be a hard road but with many Canadians that do care we will make great progress.

Bull! Now you're just being an ass. And also unlike you he recognizes the injustices suffered by Canada's indigenous people. Children taken from their families, made to feel shame about their culture and put in religious schools. Since much of their culture is orally relating their history and ceremonies, irreparable damage was done to their culture. At least Justin has the COMMON DECENCY to recognize this and seek to right a historical wrong.

If you think Stephen Harper was good to Canada's Indigenous peoples, come walk a mile or 1000 in my mocassins. Anyone can say the words of a speech written by some paid speechwriter. But it was an empty apology, nothing changed, funding was slashed, programs suffered or died. Aboriginal rights and title were ignored and trodden on, as were hundreds of murdered and missing aboriginal women and children. Harper refused to sign on to the United Nations Declaration of Rights of Indigenous Peoples. Harper alone set the relationship between the govt and indigenous peoples back decades.
I saw a Tshirt the other day that said, 'Think you can trust the government? Ask an Indian'. That's Harper's work.

Rob
Today in his official speech from Ottawa he mentioned all of the Provinces by name but forgot one not like it was 50 to remember.
I wasn't bitching just to bitch and my comment had nothing to do with the Nations Business.
I still have no comment about that.

Rob just to make a point
I went to school with friends that had surnames
Running Rabbit, Jacknife, Four Horns , Standing Alone and many others with a great heritage.
But still no comment.
But Trudeau forgot about the home of 225,000 Aboriginal People he cares so much about in his speech.

Thanks Rob. I heard the speech, didn't notice the slip, but thought it was a pretty good speech. Now we indigenous Canadians will have to hold him to his promises. Very few of his usual uummms. (Could use a Toastmaster's course for that, I've been thinking.)
As I recall, growing up in Alberta, there was a terrific hatred for Justin's father, Pierre Elliott, mostly based on him being French. It seems this hatred is generational and as soon as I realized he had left Alberta out of the speech, I knew we were in for a bunch of petty minded folks whining about that, without looking at the bigger picture.
We have a prime minister who knows how to conduct himself in public and international settings with the class and dignity befitting a world leader. He doesn't conduct character assassinations by Twitter, or spread hatred and lies. He doesn't speak about women negatively, nor sexually assault them and brag about it.
IMHO he's more of an asset than a liability, and certainly not a someone who deserves to be called nasty names. Can't you just concentrate on the good stuff, and not sweat the small stuff? Then again, maybe he left Alberta out on purpose, because of all the Trudeau haters and his past unwelcome receptions there. In that case, serves you right.
PS About the vicious posts to you Rob, from SC. Don't know what set the guy off. Your post had helpful info that he thought was you being pompous or something. Didn't see it that way myself. I've followed the board long enough that there have been some times when you should have had a scolding, but this wasn't one of them. I especially liked it when your mom would wade in!
Cheers!

I guess your have a point, not a big deal forgetting about where the largest part of ALL provinces equalization payments come from...and which province might you think recieves the Lions share of the last years $18 billion....you may be right if you said la belle province, even the poor province of Ontario received over $1.5 Billion! Just sayin :worthy:

The former prime minister Harper denied Canada was a colonial state. Ain't gonna get to reconciliation without acknowledging the truth, learning our real history, or if our partner, the government keeps cheating on us.
At school our kids are studying ancient Greece, ancient Rome and ancient Egypt, while the 15,000+ yrs of Salish history within a few metres of the school isn't taught. (True story, son's school, now working with school district to change that) Colonialism tends to deny and negate the validity of the oppressed peoples' history, therefore their existence.
Never be scared to learn something new and open your mind to other ways of doing things. Learning the truth is the only way we'll ever get to reconciliation.
Don't want to learn the real history? Then things will stay as they are. Approximately 90 First Nations without clean drinking water, some of them for years and years. Kids committing suicide, self medicating leading to addiction issues, above average health problems, majority of kids in care will be First Nations.........
If the same amount of people who 'help' in Zihua, were to put that same energy into their nearest Indigenous community, think of the huge difference that would make! Many of the issues these helpers are helping with, are the same issues indigenous communities at home are facing. Do they realize that many of the people they are helping in Zihua are Mexican 'Indians'? We are also Zihua helpers, so don't think I'm slagging off the helpers. We usually have a least one volunteer 'job' each day we are there.

I'm assuming that was Pierre, not Justin. Guilty for the sins of the father? Or simply blind hatred? Perhaps a certain degree of jealousy for a handsome, successful and charismatic young man. With good hair. Oh, and absolutely fluent in both official languages.
Not a word about how great the concert was, that the weather was so bad they had to cancel the air show, how bored Camilla looked, nice that Bono & the Edge performed, how huge the stage was, how exciting to introduce the two new astronauts, that the new astronaut and the F18 pilot are brothers or that the newly cleaned parliament buildings looked good. Just that Alberta wasn't mentioned.
Cup half empty.
(I was there last month and didn't think they'd finish cleaning the buildings in time. Was surprised at the beautifully coloured stone that was used to build them. Reds, oranges, yellows, browns. Never saw it before under all that black dirt and soot, and I've been there a fair lot. The coloured stone was used to create designs and patterns on the buildings. Who knew?)

And the best fireworks show we have ever seen, 20 minutes and 17 seconds from 5 sights lighting up the sky to everyones amazement. Spectacular! This was about celebrating 150 years of the creation of a country by the people that decided that we needed to have a nation separate from those south of the border. Darn good idea they did that too.

About the other subject well as I suggested to friends I was with last night read "The Inconvenient Indian" by Thomas King if you need perspective. Some of you fellow Canadians may know him from the "Dead Dog Cafe" series that used to run on CBC radio.
