The secret to enjoying Playa Las Gatas or Isla Ixtapa during the busy season is to get there early between 8 and 9 in the morning so you can enjoy the peace and tranquility of the place before the swarms of families arrive. By noon the place is usually a madhouse.

At Las Gatas our favorite place to go is always the restaurant Chez Arnoldo. The Verboonen-Espino family are among the oldest families in the region, and the food and drinks are always excellent there. What a privilege it is to have a place like this to escape to! B-)

On your recommendation, we have always gone there. This last spring when things were busy, we took guests elsewhere. Never again.

We look upon Las Gatas as a mini-vacation within a vacation (for most) and they make it exactly one.

Thanks so much for you recommendation several years ago. It still stands up!

La Barra is also in full steam ahead vacation season. Yesterday there was barely a square meter of open sand from the far South of the lagoon entrance to well North of La Condessa and pretty crowded up tot he Hotel. And wish I was young enough to enjoy the part at the Hotel last night, lasted until 4 a.m. Life is good.

Any idea how someone of Dutch extraction (Verboonen) ended up in Zihua?

Yes, I believe their Dutch ancestor came with the English Admiral George Anson while he was plundering Spanish ships along our coast and stayed.

The late Oliver Verboonen told me the forebear had deserted from the French army, but either way, it's a great story.

I love crossing Playa Las Gatas around sunrise, when the dogs are still too sleepy to even bark as I cruise along towards Owen Lee's place. On my way back one or two of them will check me out, maybe even come to see me, as their people start setting up for the day's visitors.

In complete agreement regarding Chez Arnoldo -it's THE place to hang on that beach.
