Guerrero Takes Tainted Booze Alert Seriously

by Johnny Briefcase @, Sunday, August 06, 2017, 12:34 (129 days ago)

Guerrero is taking steps to ensure that it's tourist locations do not have the same sort of "tainted / adulterated alcohol" problems that have been reported in Cancun and Playa del Carmen. Nice to see the authorities are taking preemptive action to stop this trend coming to Zih. Still, it would be smart to be alert and try and stay on top of where your drinks are coming from. ....JB

If I may point out one FACT. It was never proven, nor is there even any evidence, that any of those so-called affected tourists ever consumed adulterated alcohol. It was simply the claim made by the family of the woman who was found dead in an All-Inclusive resort hotel's pool. Many folks like me who have observed tourist behaviour for numerous decades believe they simply drank too much. Something I've seen practically on a daily basis for over 45 years now.

So I respectfully disagree with your premise that there is a trend or that it ever even happened at all.

Most tainted bootleg booze in Mexico is sold in rural areas to poorly educated people, many who can't even read. Not in resort areas where there are professionals and educated folks who are likely to inspect labels and tax stamps. In a resort A-I hotel it is more likely that they might water down their booze or simply use cheaper brands than they would ever use bootleg brands. No F&B manager at any resort hotel would allow that. And to date I have seen no evidence to suggest that is what happened.

This is what happens when people that are used to a couple of beers at a sitting, drink four "Free" Coco Locos.

Could not be more correct. Very unfortunate tragic events do happen but you need to take responsibility for your own actions. Some people want to sue McDonalds for being fat.:fiddle:

And what about some of the local (bootleg) mescal, such as that sold by Don Eladio, aka Señor Gunnysack? One of the cantineros at our hotel this past winter also hooked me up with some even better local mescal. Are these suspect?

I think the concern has been with night clubs, bars and hotels trying to cut costs.. The home made stuff sold by the same guys year after year is probably better for you than cheap store bought stuff. As usual, the key is to know who you are doing business with. ....JB

It's easy to buy bad mezcal. Don Eladio makes no secret of the fact that he sells two kinds. One that is pure mezcal that costs a little more, and one that has extra alcohol added. It's okay to drink, but the mezcal with extra alcohol packs a wallop and goes down a bit rough. I drank it for years and survived. ;-)

You can get good mezcal at the Eco-Tianguis Zanca each Saturday morning in the plaza in front of the Vicente Guerrero school across the street from the museum. They also sell good mezcal at Restaurante Any across from Banamex and at La Porteña on the downtown waterfront.

The article we read in the LA Times said that she had "only" had 5 shots of Tequila.

Add the sun, the heat, the great spicy food, and what tainted booze? I'm experienced, and I'm face down after 5 shots of Tequila!!!!!

We have been visitors to Mexico for about 35 years and this is my observation and opinion. We all know that excessive alcohol
for most will make you sick and for a few could cause death. The bad booze can be bottled and sealed under a brand name.
Inspectors, ,hotel buyers, right down to the serving level may be involved..... With all due respect I think some on this board are in denial. I am not saying that the tourist that passed away in this case was from tainted booze. There is a lot of crap and corruption going on, more so than years past. It saddens me and certainly makes me worry for the future of those that depend on tourism.
In more recent years I have personally been served some rough alcohol that made me sick, even when you ask for the better brand. Unless the bartender knows you , your quality of drink is not for sure. What if some these kids did get tainted booze?
Talking to friends in Ixtapa/Zihuantanejo just a few years ago, there certainly has been a turn in their lives for the worse.
Cannot put heads in the sand.

Thank You
