Avocados are becoming too expensive for the country that originally cultivated them and who produce and export the majority of them. Wow - who would have thunk it ? JB

I am not an expert shopping but all of my native friends are complaining about huge price increases on virtually every product---tortillas, tomatoes limes, you name it---

Hello Johnny B:

Now I will step up to my "soapbox" about complaints about high prices.
Here is an excerpt from the article:

"But individual consumption has slipped from roughly 9kg a year to 7.5kg, and many ordinary Mexicans say that avocados are simply too expensive for them."

But, wait a minute.
Let's figure the cost on another popular JUNK food that is widely consumed, in the standard / "ordinary" Mexican diet......
SABRITAS (papas).....One 50 gram bag cost $10 pesos, last time I checked awhile back.
So, it takes TWENTY 50gr bags makes one kilogram.
At $10 per bag: 20 x $10=$200 pesos per Kg!
And, those aren't "simply too expensive for them".
Unfortunately, Sabritas, I.M.O., has in a sense, brainwashed the population, so that when they buy their products, they don't consider the REAL COST PER Kg, only the cost PER BAG.
Now then, if I offered you JUNK FOOD AT $200 per Kg, will you buy it?

Final note, most candies, junk food, and sweet cake items like Choco Roles, Penguinos, etc., when figuring the REAL COST, come at a steep price per Kg ranging from the low $100s to the $300 pesos per Kg. Yet, I don't hear any complaints about those prices.
Go figure, YOUR turn now.

Actually. I believe that the Real Cost is what they are dragging behind them after a few years of eating that crap.

Hola Labrat

Point well taken, that may also lead to steep economic consequences.

Point taken J. There are a lot of junk food junkies in Mexico and a junkie will pay anything for their fix. ....JB

"Avocados are junk food??"

--->frostbite

We both know the answer to that.

Maybe you didn't get my point? :-o

Which is:
Shoppers complain that AVOCADOS, lemon, tomatoes, tortillas, etc., etc., are too expensive, (and maybe they are).
BUT, apparently, those SAME shoppers who voice those complaints, gladly pay for and never complain about the high cost of all the junk food they eat....both in economic terms, and from a health standpoint, e.g. in the long term.
And NO, not everyone who eats avocados eats junk food, understood.

"Saludos" ☺

I got your point but, according to my apparently limited grasp of the English language, it seems that you referred to avocados as junk food.

Hola frostbite:

Perhaps I am the one with "limited grasp of the English language":ponder:
Absolutely not, sorry you may have misconstrued, or an error in my communication that led you to think that I "referred to avocados as junk food."

At any rate, of course, AVOCADOS ARE NOT JUNK FOOD........

Sabritas y alimentos de chatarra are often purchased by young people. For one thing the average Mexican woman shops in a mercado municipal an open air market. You won't see Sonrics or cerveza in their bolsas.

When visitors from Hong Kong arrive in the USA they will find it hard to get a grasp on the handle of Authentic USA, if they head to Chinatown. Same for Mexico. You won't find many ordinary shoppers in Mega. Try going to an open air market. And I'll bet if you look for junk food stats, you may just find your examples in a Burger King or 7-11.

Produce and otras alimentos are damned expensive. And in the SAME TOWN that has thousands of acres of for example jitomates under cultivation, you won't find any bargains. My family shops at tianguis, and they stop alongside the roadway to purchase from a camioneta or traylor whenever possible.

Remember, the wealthy have to keep up with the Gonzales'. Counter their new Escalade with perhaps a Range Rover. And product prices in USA supermarkets are rising fast. But not Social Insecurity payments.

But for a taste of reality "It's more important to have bastante lana for buying 3 cartones of Pacifico weekly than pay 40 pesos to replace all six burned out brake light bulbs."

Such is life...
