When we finish our stay in Zihua we would like to take the bus into the highlands to see the monarchs and then continue on to Mexico City for a few days. I saw something awhile back on this board about someone doing the same thing. I need info on destinations, transportation, and guide service. Any help would be appreciated.:-D

The one Reserve we went was closed when we were in Morelia in Oct. They waited a while before it was reopened- was told the butterflies were tired from their long flight. We flew down in January and our taxi/tour guide that took us to the Reserve. The Reserve we went to offered horses to ride up to the plateau and then walk into the forest up where the butterflies were. It was around 10 am when we were walking up the trail. We met people coming down that were disappointed because it was cold and the sun was just starting to warm the forest- they could only see the butterflies nesting in the trees. This was a bucket list for us. We rode the horses up and back from the plateau. Kathie had never ridden a horse before and didn't know about adjusting the stirrups. She was rubbed raw in places from the saddle- said that was a first and last time riding a horse. We stayed at a B&B recommended by the board and we met our guide through them. The first time we went to Morelia with the reserves closed, he gave us a tour of the villages between Morelia and Patzquaro. That is a must tour if you can get a guide that knows about the little villages and what their trade is- a lot of history involved with the villages.

I have had venison sausage and aligator gumbo but have never tried butterfly preserve. Can I buy this somewhere in Z? Sounds delicious!
