When people hear that we are planning a vacation in Mexico they most often ask if we arent nervous in Mexico "with all of the trouble". Several people are concerned that the Canadian government has a travel advisory (and has had for several years) advising caution for most areas in Guerrero except Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. In light of the tragic events in Vegas this weekend past and the staggering statistics re gun deaths I wonder when the Canadian government will post an advisory for travel to the USA. In the meantime I think that following ordinairy care and caution our winter trip will be as wonderful as always. My condolences to everyone who has suffered a loss in Vegas and to all Americans. My heart breaks for you.

"The United Arab Emirates, Bahamas, France, United Kingdom, Canada, New Zealand and Germany are among those urging caution to U.S.-bound travelers. The concerns include mass shootings, police violence, anti-Muslim and anti-LGBT attitudes and the Zika virus."

Thanks for bashing the United States.

The sure sign of immaturity is the inability to handle criticism, especially such well deserved criticism as Ingrid alluded to. Except that Ingrid didn't even criticize the USA. She asked a logical question based on the actions of the US government when incidents of violence occur in other countries.

I in no way intended to "bash" U.S.A. and having read the post over again don't see anything that could be construed as "bashing". I am going to put your response down to heightened sensitivity to a perceived bashing as a result of the events in Vegas. Sorry for any hurt feelings.

Maybe that says it best.

We are into hyper-criticizing everything we do and endless analysis of events. The 24/7 news cycle with all the media outlets scrambling for readers with bigger headlines is partially to blame.

Listen, I can't blame you for being sensitive. Your country has had an exhausting few weeks and I can imagine how edgy you must feel. Between the weather that seemed to be using you as a target and the unspeakable event in Vegas it must feel like you are under siege. I know that just watching the news and hearing about your problems has been distressing and it's no ones intention to cause more upset. Know that people sincerely wish you all well.

Dude, the US is bashing itself. There isn't one significant area you can point to that is not in need of serious help, and there's no one giving it more than lip service. There's a freak show in the White House, Congress is paralyzed, the infrastructure is rotting, storms are ferocious and people are getting killed left and right. Feels like end times to me. But WTF do I know?

If I wasn't living here I'd be damned afraid of coming here.

Yes, Bill, blame the media.
It's probably all fake news, right?
No way it's guns or Trump.
No way it's frenzied worship of guns and the military or national guilt and shame flowing from losing every war the USA has fought since WW2.
Except Grenada. The world's mightiest military won that one hands down.
Congratulations.

It’s not a vacation destination to me or all of us who live here. It’s a place where I came to enjoy FREEDOM from an increasingly authoritarian and repressive government that bans fun and foments violence, locking up more people than communist China! It’s a place where I enjoy being far away from rednecks and racists, where even the most conservative citizen has more in common with the rest of the population than Republicans have with anyone remotely “liberal”. We start no wars, own no nuclear weapons, and we have created no terrorists that are trying to kill our citizens. So while the USA was a nice place to be for a while, I’m thrilled each day to wake up in Zihuatanejo even with all our backwardness and problems. The weather is as good as it gets. We haven’t given up on improving our democracy. The food is healthy and delicious. The culture is rich and ancient. And the people are unpretentious and warm. That good feeling that the USA lost after the 60’s is alive and flourishing here. We remain part of the community of nations instead of pretending we don’t need the rest of the world or that we’re better than anyone. We enjoy and admire much about our northern neighbors and welcome them with open arms, but we also have no illusions about why we are afflicted with narco cartels or who empowers and arms them.

¡Viva Zihuatanejo!

Si ! Exactly why we are extending our stay this year in wonderful Z ! Life here in USA under this president and his complicit enablers and defenders has become extremely painful for anyone who believes in decency, tolerance, and respect for others, including particularly those who are the victims of rampant racial and economic discrimination. If we were younger, we would pack up and move. With all its difficulties and challenges, Zih., and its residents, remain beacons of civility and promise to those of us to the north.

I realized while reading your post that you were articulating exactly what I find to

be most appealing to me about the area. While the weather is perfect and beaches

beautiful, what keeps us going back to Zihuatanejo is so much more. The people seem

to have healthy self respect and respect for others that has fallen from favour lately. They welcome the visitors and are proud to share the beauty of their country with us. They are funny, kind, generous and compassionate with complete strangers while maintaining a proud dignity. I feel that lately things have been changing dramatically in how we treat each other. There is a nasty, mean spirited tone that has become acceptable and is only getting worse. I find that this kind of condoned meaness makes me anxious and edgy and probably a litte snippier than I try to be. I know that it doesnt take long after landing and checking in to our hotel for a tightness in my neck and shoulders to disapate and a sense of lightness and well-being to replace it. Hopefully there will be some kind of shift in behaviour bringing back respect and common courtesy and compassion here at home.

Is that what you think? I'm an ordinairy person dealing with people on a regular basis and I find that a lot of people have a short fuse as of late. They are impatient, disrespectful and rude. I'm not saying everyone or even most but certainly more than in the not so distant past. Acceptable language has declined along with "political correctness" and racial slurs are uttered with a kind of defiance. Politeness seems old fashioned and kindness not the norm but worth mentioning. I sense an aura of harshness that feels new to me but hey , you could be right.

No, I think you're probably correct if you are dealing with the General Public.

I still think that those short fuses are exacerbated by the Stirring the Pot, if it Bleeds it Leads Media.

Nowadays in the Media you might get a 15 second spot on Something Good, then the rest of the Hour on "You Know Who Screwed Whom Today?" which will repeat ad nausim for the next 12 hours.......or until someone new screws someone else.

I just returned from my first trip to New York, about which I was a bit anxious. Contrary to popular rhetoric, I found the people friendly, polite and helpful. A lady asked me where I was from, so I said Vancouver Island, Canada. She said I knew you weren't a New Yorker (imagine the accent!) because you were talking to people! We chatted for a couple hours and are now e-pen pals!
I have to say I am not a shopper, but I think if I lived in New York, I could become one. And if I did live there, I'd never have to cook again. I'd get it all delivered!
I listened to a discussion today on CBC radio about guns in the US. Seems the gun lobby got a clause in the CDC charter (or whatever you call it) that said no funding could go to research aimed at gun control. This means no studies have been done to look seriously at the issue and possible solutions. So to answer why Americans are obsessed with guns, no one really knows.

I think why is because it's what their Dad's and Uncles did and it's what they know. I can understand the hunters (not that I could do it) but it's the high powered semi automatic killing machines that I just can't justify. I don't hold out much hope that things will change any time soon because if Sandy Hook didnt jar them I don't know what will.

That's right, anything that comments on the very strange U.S. fascination with guns is "a rant".
I see the NRA loonies have come out solidly against banning bump stocks. I'm guessing the Founding Fathers would probably be pleased. After all, bump stocks don't kill people.....guns kill people.

Of course there a many lovely people in New York, but my experience was somewhat different. Fresh off the boat from Europe, wandering around town, I had gotten lost. I approached a woman looking into a store window. (I was well dressed: white shirt, tie, etc.). Me: "Excuse me, how to I get to Penn station?" She: "Get lost, or I'll call the cops!" Kind of funny, 50 some years later but, at the time, I was quite taken aback.

Sydney, lucky you didn't use one of those Monty Python foreign phrase books. You know - the foreign tourist in London walks up to a bobby, wanting directions to Piccadilly Circus, but the book translates it as "May I fondle your buttocks?"
