More dog stuff...

We will be staying in colonia la madera for dec and January. We usually use a topical flea/tick medication on them. They are both very small. I’m wondering what other long stay pet owners use? There are new meds on the market that treat fleas ticks and heart worm but are given orally. I have researched these and some have alarming side effects.
Opinions, anyone?

We are old school, but still use, and are totally happy with Program and Capstar (as necessary) Look them up, the generics are not expensive and there is no poison, just life cycle inhibitors for the fleas. With very short haired dogs, we can see a tick if one gets on them immediately. In the last 3 years, we have had 3 ticks. We are moving this winter, still on Playa la Ropa, so we'll play it by ear.

They also swim daily, so anything topical won't last. Contacted several manufacturers and they admitted that "waterproof" doesn't mean daily swimming.

Heartworms, we purchase the liquid and dose both dogs monthly. We do not have them checked annually for heart worms because they have both been on the preventative liquid since they were 3 months old. They are now 2 and 7, so all is well. We do not treat the cat for heartworms.

I'll share my source for the liquid if you'd like.

We usually stay January, February and March (this year we are adding two months and coming Nov. 4 YIPPEE. But I digress. We use Bravecto which you give once and it lasts for three months. It is given orally. Our first year three we were picking ticks off her everyday (used Revolution). We share our space with lots of dogs and a bamboo wooded area .

Hi , only the first line of my reply to you showed up!
I asked how big your dog is, ours are 6 and 10 pounds. Also I was concerned about the side effect with bravecto, but your dog seems to have done ok.
Also congrats on your long stay!

She is an 11 lb shitzu bichon cross. Absolutely no problem with the medication but I only ever give it to her in Z as that is the only place we had issues. She is 10 years old but looks like a puppy. Wish we could grow fur lol.

Hola
We have been using a product called Trifexis. For those interested it is spinosad and milebemycin oxime. It is for fleas, ticks and various internal parasites. It is in tablet form and administered once a month with our dogs food. He is sixteen years old and has been taking this medication since he was a pup with no ill effects. When I was still working and not travelling as much, he only took it is the summer months. Now that we are retired and travel to Mexico for 5 to 6 months a year, he takes his pill monthly. Have never seen a flea or tick on him.
PS our dog is about 10 kilos (22 pounds) in weight. There are different strengths available, depending on the dogs weight.

This medication you use, is it available locally? If yes, from whom/where and what's the cost per your dog's weight? Thank you.

Hola
Not sure what you mean by available locally. I buy mine at my home in Burnaby BC Canada. It is not cheap. I think it is about $20 CND a pill. It is well worth it. We buy our 6 month supply before we come down.
