I have been traveling to Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo since 1989 and have always felt safe. I am planning our trip for 2018 and I have been reading articles about the crime in the area. Is anyone else concerned to travel there? Article 1. http://www.foxnews.com/world/2017/05/26/mexican-forces-raid-police-precinct-find-20-officers-had-drug-trafficking-ties.html and Article 2 https://travel.state.gov/content/passports/en/alertswarnings/mexico-travel-warning.html

I am also concerned. I know that there is record crime in Chicago, Baltimore etc, but the lack of any resemblance of an honest police force in Zihua is troubling. I am booked for a month next February but am weighing my options for the following year.

Thank you for your reply. I didn't know if it was just me or if there was reason for concern since the USA State Department has banned travel there for federal employees.

Been coming for 3 to4 months year for 17 years. Now have moved here permanently. Crime is not an issue for my lifestyle-I go anywhere I ;lease and feel safe---but I am not a nigh owl.

The only 'crime' I know of is some drug based (like anywhere) and some extortion of local businesses.

All in all, I am very comfortable here, even got my Permanent resident visa recently.

Yeah, there are serious factual problems with those articles, but you'll be happy to hear that of the forty-something police arrested and sent to prison, 17 were just released and invited back to work on the police force. I'm sure they met lots of new friends on prison, and I expect they are less than enthusiastic to work for the people who put them in jail in the first place, but hey! It's appearances that count, right?

The sad truth remains we have no reliable local police force you could call in an emergency and expect a response in under an hour and a half. That seems to be the collective consensus. They're good at showing up where bodies are found and they're good at being bodyguards for políticos and influyentes, but other than that they haven't been much use for local citizens for many years if ever. But we do have the presence of the always wonderful and sometimes awesome Armada de México. I'll be posting a new emergency phone number soon for them, because our 911 service is a pathetic joke.

We do have a mixed state and federal force that are trying to take up the slack, but they are spread too thin and they aren't local so they don't know the characteristics of the local area, and the 911 calls are routed to a city somewhere else where they haven't a clue about streets or names of places or businesses. And apparently you have to speak slowly so they can type everything...

In spite of the fact that we have no local police force, there has been no looting of stores or rioting in the streets. The community is mostly made up of extremely hard-working, friendly and good-natured people. It's not hard to spot true locals because they're the ones who smile and say "buen día".

I wouldn't trust just ANY armed person around my nieto! ¡Viva la Marina!

i think that people making these types of inquiries prefer factual answers to being misled that everything is sweetness, light, fairy dust and unicorns. Armed with honest, factual information people are able to make reasonable decisions appropriate for them and their family. It serves no purpose to lure people with inaccurate information only to have edgy, nervous visitors miserable and unable to relax and enjoy their vacations.

Canada1, I am not sure I understand your comment. Are you implying that by providing people with accurate information that you would be discouraging them from vacationing there or that people committed to vacationing there will be edgy, nervous and unable to relax as a result of being informed? I think that most people being informed of the realities of the area and on how to enjoy themselves safely will choose to explore and fall in love with our paradise. There absolutely will be those who will find the information unsettling and change their plans but I maintain better that they make informed decisions based on THEIR comfort level than spend the week frightened and intimidated. If the intention is just to get people to vacation there you can promise them anything but if you hope that they are going to enjoy themselves and return year after year allow them to make informed decisions.

I agree in part Ingrid, but if they are not Media Hounds that follow all of the If it bleeds it leads "news" then I don't understand why they would spend a week being fearful in their room in their first place?

If they are said Media Hounds, they probably suck up the fear mongering to the point that they don't travel anywhere to begin with.

My reply was directed at Canada1 who said {"Rob, your message all though factual does not instill alot of confidence for people planning to visit this beautiful place.:-) in response to an inquiry from Elizabeth regarding people's perceptions of safety in the area. I probably misunderstood but felt that he was suggesting that the facts might not be best for luring people who might have safety concerns to the area. I wasn't referring to Media hounds and any impressions that they may gleen through "fake news". I guess I felt that people might have an expectation of honesty from fellow travellers on a forum like this. But then again, you are probably right.

Canada1 my understanding of the purpose of this board was to discuss and exchange information and thoughts on Ixtapa/Zihuatanejo. Given that criteria I would think that the more people contributing their experiences and impressions the better to provide various points of view. I'm not sure than anyone is "right" when exchanging impressions or ideas unless their impressions or ideas agree with yours. I agree that Keith has travelled often to the area and is well-informed and is generous with information and is proficient in google but in terms of opinions and impressions I don't think anyone is "right" just different mostly based on life experiences. While I find your man-crush charming I think you might find other's thoughts worth consideration and some ''gigantic words" worth hearing. I may be misguided but I don't think so.

We've been visiting Zihua for around 20 years and built a house there. While there is crime there, as there is everywhere, we do not feel intimidated. We generally stay in the "touristy" parts of town after dark, we don't stumble around drunk, we don't withdraw money from ATMs after dark, we don't wear flashy jewelry, etc. i.e. commonsense behavior anywhere you go. Relax and have a great time in Zihua. We're looking forward to our next trip down in December.

There is crime most anywhere, I feel safe in Zihuatanejo, but as others have said, I don't travel outside the 'tourist' areas, I don't get drunk, and I leave my jewelry home.

I'm headed down in 40 days. Unfortunately only for 8 nights. I try to go every year. I would love to learn what I can about a possible move down there.

For permanent residency, Mexico requires proof of a minimum income. When I received mine, it was US$1500.00 per month.

It can also be done by showing a total net worth of, I think last year it was about $300,000 US dollars. Then, no monthly income proof is necessary.

Also, you don't have to be a permanent resident to live here. Many people come and go and are able to get 180 day permits every time they return.
