Turtle egg poachers?

The other night, late, maybe 11pm and this morning just now as it was getting light, I saw a couple of flashlights on the beach (La Madera) scanning the sand just above the tide line. Would that be the turtle egg poachers that I have heard mentioned here? Do the Marinas do any type of monitoring during the night or early morning for this? I am thinking probably not, but hoping I am wrong. We have been lucky enough here to witness both the laying of eggs and the hatching of eggs right here on the beach over the years. It is pretty amazing to witness. The Marinas took them in each event to hatch and to release later.

The other evening about dusk, I saw a group of about 10 people standing by the waters edge looking at something. I got out the binoculars and checked it out. There was a turtle in the surf that appeared to be heading towards the beach but I think with all of the people there, it just stayed about 20 feet or so out. I had our front desk man call the Marinas to let them know about it. I don't know what happened after that but at least I did what I could.

I doubt what you saw were poachers. I've never seen them use flashlights. They usually work under cover of darkness. Probably either Marinos or just locals. Maybe some turtles hatched.

Thanks for keeping an eye out for them. They need all the help they can get. This has been an extremely bad year for them.

Thanks for the reply, Rob. That's good to know that you don't think it is poachers. Hope you right!
