I am renting a condo in Ixtapa this winter that doesn't have private wifi, only wifi servicing the entire complex. Is there an internet cafe or similar, with secure wifi somewhere in Ixtapa or Zihua that I can do my banking, etc.

If you are in it for the long haul you might consider signing up for a VPN service and browse to your heart's content, from the Condo.

Thank you. We are there for 2 - 3 months. Excuse my ignorance but, where would I go to sign-up for that service or what company would I contact? I have only vacationed in the area a few times for 2 weeks at at time.

VPN services.

I use one we set up at my place of employment. PC Magazine can be trusted as much as anyone, I suppose. I'm not sure if being in MX is an issue. You may need to find a more local company. Or utilize one of the other options being put forth. Rob probably knows better than anyone.

I don't. Not very savvy on this subject. I usually use the hotel wifi on my phone or tablet when there for a short time.

Sign up with Telcel for I believe it’s their Amigo service and connect with 3G or 4G, whichever is available in the neighborhood. You can get 1GB of celular data transfer a month with phone service that includes unlimited calls anywhere in North America for 200 pesos.

I have been using a VPN for a couple of years NORD VPN. I just renewed with this discounted price. Being able to mimic locations in different countries also lets you bypass website geographical restrictions. So I can watch Canadian or US Netflix as well as Bell tv. https://join.nordvpn.com/order/?2year&coupon=2YDeal2017

sling box is great if you are there short periods as your cable must still be connected at home. If you are away for 6 months you might suspend your cable and save yourself some coin. Sling box is not the answer to secure internet though.

Have your owner/property manager get internet installed for you. Just pay for the time you are there.

the original poster said the rental unit has access but it is an unsecured network, she is afraid of banking over wifi.

NO......the poster said there is public internet in the building, but NOT in the condo.

I said she should contact the owner/property manager and have a private connection installed in the condo.

VERY easy....VERY cheap.

The poster mentioned getting internet at a business to do her banking. The LAST place I would trust would be a business. I would trust the condo building internet over any business.

one other thing you could do.

by Curbarn, summer b.c. winter zihua, Monday, October 30, 2017, 19:18 (22 days ago) @ Tutie

if you can access the modem or modem router, you could do a wired connection. then it would be secure. all you need is the cable.

Thank you for all the suggestions. They've been very helpful. I will look into some of these options.
