Arriving 2 weeks. What is open? Any sign of Gringo Gordo? Trattoria Gianni?
Elvira?

Sadly Gringo Gordo is out of business. Tratoria opens Nov 1. Sixtinos is now where La Bocana was. Jungle Pizza is open.

Also try El Vigia at Real De Las Palmas at the south end of La Ropa. Excellent Eggs Benedict, good bagel, lox, cream cheese and lovely dinners etc.

We agree with you, Helene. El Vigia Restaurant has an excellent cook. We have ordered from him multiple occasions and all have been excellent.

Don't miss El Manglar for lunch, you might see crocodiles swimming past your table and the food is excellent. Closed on Wednesdays.

Helene: I am not familiar with Tratoria or Sixtinos (sure miss La Bocana). Have you been to these places? Where is Tratoria?

Arriving soon and plan to eat at all our regular spots, Memos, Manglar, Il Mare, Marina, Rufos, etc. etc. but always enjoy some new finds.

Tratoria Gianni is the Italian place, very good, pretty much across the street from where Gringo Gordo was. It's been open several years.

Sixtinos opened last winter, and is affiliated with Loot. Check their website, it's interesting, has music and good food.

Is El Manglar open yet? I thought it usually opened mid-November.

I just spoke with Memo- he hopes to open on Nov. 2, but needs to have some work done on the bridge-hopefully before then.

Paty's is open. I haven't seen anyone at Elvira's yet- maybe I just haven't been going past at the right time?

Thanks Linda, I was told last year that Elvira's was shutting down permanently. I sure hope that is not the case. Does anyone know if they have sold it.

I noticed last year that Elvira's was closed at least 2, and often as many as 4 days in any given week. I wondered then how long they could last.

You can thank the extortionists and the lack of any credible public security. Elvira’s commissioned me to make them a website, yet when it was finished the owner seemed to have disappeared. I suspect they got hit by extortionists the same as dozens of other businesses in our community. They appear to operate with complete immunity from the government. Most folks prefer to close their business than to deal with violent criminals.

I am very sorry to hear that. It was one of my favourite spots to eat. I feel very sorry for the hardworking staff if this is reason for the closure. I will still visit La Ropa but when will the Mexican officials realize that something has to be done to protect their own citizens.

Very sorry. We ate there a lot over our 18 years on La Ropa. Our loyalty was to the staff who were so hospitable, friendly, and proud of the food they served or quick to make changes. The owner (or manager?) often dropped by for a chat and was involved in the association of La Ropa merchants.

Likewise. Sebe, Jaime, Moises & Noaum back in the day. Always our first stop after unpacking and for the dos por uno's happy hour. Great staff always. I hope this is a tempest in a teapot and they will be there next month when we arrive. If not, thanks for the memories!:-)

Heard Elvira will be opening end of November. La Cantinita downtown Z will be moving in from what I hear.

I went there a few years ago and there was no bridge. After carefully scanning the area for crocodiles, I quickly waded across and had the usual excellent meal.

La Bocana is now downtownon Nicolas Bravo next to El Consuelo (the old Paccalos) across from Bar La Playa/Captains Daughter. Still great seafood.

Good to know. I was almost reaching acceptance of the possibility of our not making it down this year. The more you guys post this kind of stuff the harder it will be if that proves true! (Holding breath and keeping fingers and toes crossed.)
