Catalina vs. Villa Mexicana

by JulieG, Monday, November 13, 2017, 16:37 (66 days ago)

I used to go every year from 2000 to 2008. Finally getting back down there next February. We stayed at Villa Mexicana a few times and enjoyed it before we upgraded to condos after that. On this trip we're back in hotel mode but the Mexicana doesn't have dates open on the days we will be there.
My next choice is the Catalina but I've never stayed there. Can someone tell me the pros and cons? I'm very close to making the reservation but want to make sure it's a good choice.
Also ... any other comparable hotels on La Ropa? I want one with a restaurant, AC and access to beach lounging.
Thanks for your input!

We like Catalina a lot. Many years ago, we stayed at VM, prior to renovations. While it is right on the beach, the beach area is quite crowded compared to Catalina. The rooms at Catalina are larger, with steps down to the beach, 120up to the front desk, and almost directly across from the bar. Admittedly the bathrooms in the older units are from the 50’s, but other than that things are great. The staff is amazing. I would reserve soon though, lots of regulars. We reserve a year ahead.

We just got back 3 weeks ago. You can read my trip report from 11/7. We stayed in the newly renovated Playa Suite # 18 very nice room super private deck. Unless steps are difficult for you Catalina is a good choice. Say hello to Celso for us if you go.

Love both hotels. Only stay at Villa Mexicana since hubby's health doesn't allow for climbing stairs anymore.

Both places have excellent staff, are clean and well cared for.

Best beach lounging on La Ropa. Great staff and rooms make it the best place to stay. Will be stopping in for one night tomorrow, after leaving Patzcuaro.
