Fishing in the bay

by Leslie, Tuesday, November 21, 2017, 16:22 (59 days ago)

I would like to get set up with some spinning gear. I have access to a sea kayak
and would like to fish in the bay. Would I be able to purchase a rod and spinning reel (not a trolling reel lol) in Zihua? I'd rather support the local economy. I would like to do more fishing but can't afford to charter a panga more than a few times. I am thinking about leaving my fly rods at home this year. I will be arriving on New Year's Eve this trip from Edmonton, Alberta. Thanks everyone.

There's a store that sells fishing gear across from the Zocalo, upstairs, next door to Agustin Galindo's office. His address is Juan Alvarez 162A. No idea what all they sell.

In my HO, ANY kind of quality equipment is in short supply in Mexico. You would be best served by getting the quality rod and reel you want at home. Bring "Mega baits" or similar lures with you as well.

Pretend you live here and use whatever is available and have fun! There were at least 6 what we'd call Jacks taken on La Ropa this morning by several methods, and everyone was having a great time.

Bring some monofilament line and a couple hooks. Then just pick up a piece of scrap lumber lying around or a discarded water bottle to wrap your line around. Seems to work for the locals.

Okuma Travel Surf 9 or 10 foot. (around $150)

Penn Battle II reel (around $85)

Spool the reel with 30lb Spiderwire Invisi-braid, and use a 40Lb Mono leader.

Lures like the Megabait in blues and greens in 1.5 and 2.5 oz. There are some good knockoffs on Amazon.

Daiwa SP Minnow baits Sinking.

Finger Protection is a Must for shore casting (or any casting with the new super braid lines). You can get protectors, or use a bit of adhesive tape on your Trigger Finger. (don't want to see you get cut!!)
