Another "cold front" pushed through Mexico, and in the higher elevations much of the country is experiencing frigid and freezing temperatures. But not here in Zihuatanejo where our weather remains just perfect! Though we did turn the fan down and pull the bedsheet up last night.

Since most of us who live here are busiest this time of year, we won't be taking our vacations anytime soon. Instead, many of us are preparing our homes to receive visiting family and friends, as is common in tropical vacation destinations everywhere. One of our visiting family members also celebrates a birthday on Nochebuena, so we have a double celebration upcoming.

I just hope we're not deaf by then from all the powerful explosions the guadalupanos are lighting off. Curiously my wife asked a young man in front of the church yesterday who was lighting off explosives if he thought Nuestra Señora de Guadalupe would like the explosions, and he said he didn't believe in Guadalupe. I wanted to shake him and ask him why the hell he was lighting off fireworks, but we just walked away shaking our heads, reminding ourselves that we are too many.

Yes, the dogs, birds, cats and other furry, plumed and scaly creatures really suffer, to the point of making them ill and even killing them. But like the "responsible authorities" (quienes brillan por su ausencia), the "pilgrims" lighting off the explosives could care less about their fellow creatures. This is all about THEM, and of course our collective deified human "superiority".

Then there are the angelitos, machos and borrachos who taunt and torture dogs and cats with the fireworks they light off and sometimes even throw at them.

Sad and shameful. I find myself simply wishing every festive occasion would hurry up and be over, whether from the explosions or the drunks or the blaring music all night. Not that long ago even downtown Zihuatanejo used to be such a quiet and peaceful place at night. The bottle rockets used to go pfffffffffft-POP. Now they go HSSSSSSSSSSST-KABOOM! My automatic reaction remains to return fire. A pity the church leaders won't say anything to their followers, and of course if the local government would simply apply the law none of this would be a problem, which has been my principle complaint about the current municipal administration since they took office.

Great photos, as always! When we first moved to Zihua (2010), I enjoyed watching the Virgen de Guadalupe processions each evening as they approached the church. But the explosions have gotten so out of hand that I now dread them.

As do most of us.
