Hi,if we want to get to playa manzanillo for a few hours to snorkel, is the best way still to hire a boat at the pier? Do boats go back and forth, like the las gatas boats? Are there any facilities there? Any shade?

Hire a boat or go on the Picante. No facilities. Plan accordingly. Plenty of shade if you don't mind sharing with the hermit crabs who live there. Locals have a custom of always taking along an extra garbage bag to remove from the beach some of the flotsam that washes up and what other less considerate visitors leave behind.

Perhaps my LOCAL BEACHES page can help answer your questions.

This is not for everyone but you can walk there. Take the new airport road to nowhere near jungle pizza follow the road to the top. When the concrete road meets the ashphalt road, there is a dirt road on the right side this goes down to Manzanillo. You can still make it out on google maps as well. It’s about a 2 hour walk each way., take lots of water, early morning is best bet.

A 2-hour walk? I can make it in 20 minutes hustling. 40 minutes sightseeing with a break. And that was back before anything was paved.

Well there’s your mistake. You’re taking new roads. Why take a new road when there are old footpaths? You must be from the city. B-)

I have provide the best way I know how to get there on foot after getting off the bus at the new airport road in La Ropa. The total distance is 4.4 kilometers in and 4.4 out measured on google maps. It takes me 37 minutes to walk to the top and 25 down to beach. Allowing 2 hours accounts for lots what ifs, like being old. if you know a better way please share it, all you have accomplished so far is to tell me you can do it faster, that I am taking the wrong way and making a joke about city slickers. While all of none of those things may be funny or true, none of them get you to the beach.

Somewhere in the Archives of the old Message Board there may be a detailed account of how to walk there. I don't know. But the unmarked footpath I take starts at the far end of the huerta near the turnoff to Rossy's by Villa Los Arcos, goes up real quick, then east a bit before it crosses the hilltop near an old watermelon patch, and it comes out right on our property on Playa La Pedregosa, the rocky beach just west of Manzanillo, where there used to be a small arroyo with running water in the rainy season, probably ruined by the road and building construction going on. I can't tell you exactly where the path is and most of it can't be seen on any Google Map, but I or really any long-time resident can show it to you, however it's better and safer to go with someone who knows the area. Unsavory characters sometimes roam the same back roads and paths. This is NOT a walk in the park and no one is coming to rescue you if you get hurt. So I advise folks to take a boat there.

The banned Russian athletes did it in 19 minutes 57 seconds. What were you using?
