Not exactly clear on what was going on but at 8:45 am today 12/21 on the main road in Ixtapa were most of the marines, state police and bomberos in this part of Guerrero all with clean fancy uniforms apparently trying to promote a sense of security in the area. Probably for 10 % of the cost 10 cops walking the beat in downtown Zihua at night and 5 on motorcyles in Ixtapa would be far more effective at controlling crime saving the big guns for the cartel.

It was the annual show for the tourists and the bought-off media. It is quite a stupid show that only serves as a photo op at best. The government's been doing this for a few years now. It only reinforces local sentiment that they're all hat and no cattle.

A local favorite radio program, Zona Libre, the only truly open caller show where folks have their say and get to criticize the government, has been off the air for the past 3 days now after an anonymous caller commented about witnessing state police commit an extrajudicial execution of a 14-year old child after a chase and shootout and then receiving a threat to keep quiet by the same police in a local neighborhood last Monday evening. Reality here is in stark contrast with the farcical show you witnessed. #PobrePueblo

There must have been a dog and pony show of some type, They swept the whole road to nowhere, yesterday a.m. Of course they left all the trash beside the road. Also they repaired the road somewhat to the cerro, south end of La Ropa.

Now if only SOMEONE would fix the dirt road behind the trailer park leading to Punta Marina and the rest. It is such a mess and no one seems to know whose responsibility it is.

Last year, I met Homero Rodriguez on the golf course, I mentioned the road to cerro del vigiia et al was dangerous and needed to be repaired, that was on a Friday. It was repaired on Saturday. Of course it is an annual thing, but he did what he said he would do. I was surprised. You might try contacting him to at least determine whose responsibility it is. Rob probably has his contact info.

By "safe", I assume you agree that the sight of armed-to-the-teeth troops patrolling the streets makes one feel anything but safe.

Reminds me, though, of Pierre Trudeau's response to folks complaining about heavily-armed soldiers in the streets during Canada's "October Crisis" in the 60's: "Get over it", or words to that effect.

I see it as a dog and pony show, a complete waste of resources that could be used to promote community safety. Not sure I can throw too many stones as I come from a country that is spending $500 million for each unproven and unnecessary F35 airplane, I feel bad for the next generations.
