Rather than walking back up the hill, we usually take a cab. This year, the fare has always been 35 Pesos. Today, we flagged a cab down and were pleasantly surprised that the A/C was on. Upon arriving at our place, I handed the driver a 50 Peso note. He handed back a 5 Peso coin. When I pointed out that the fare was 35 Pesos, he responded that the A/C, which we didn't request, was on and insisted the regular fare was 40 Pesos. While an overcharge of 10 Pesos won't send us to the poorhouse, I don't like being taken advantage of. His number: 0344.

I ran into a similar situation a couple weeks ago when I was in Z on vacation. Stayed at Catalina. Paid anywhere between 35 and 50 most clustered around 40 for a trip to el centro. I've never been too fussy about this simply desiring to pay a fair fare. I always ask the cabbie: 35? Halfl the time this works or I get away with 40 and everyone is happy. Kind of depends on how tired I am. This time I got hit with more 50 than usual usually combined with a little grousing and I walk away, he drives away but I'm guessing we still are happy. The 50 requests usually are at the basketball court and I just go to a side street and invariably get 35. I've also noticed that if I'm with a Mexican and he/she does the fare negotiation we get a noticeably lower rate. Theres also the "I dont have change gambit used by the cabbie occasionably. I blow it off since the extra request falls flat since I carry an overabundance of change.

It's all good and I never blame the cabbie for trying to get the best deal for himself unless he's totally rude which I rarely run into. I like to concentrate more on giving the maids a little extra for their extremely hard work.

OMG Frostbite, you got ripped off for about 47 cents. What is this world coming to.

Where poster Zbulldog fails at is: When someone goes from Z to Ixtapa and the cabbie proclaims $105 pesos instead of $75. Or the time you are at Commerical going to El Mullle and the cabbie states 80pesos. Now this may not be too bad if you are in the area for a week. HOWEVER when you live there for 4 months a year this gets OLD after the first time.
MAYBE Zbulldog is one of these people who will return his new tax relief to the government as well?

We are almost (thank you whatever) though with the renovations necessary to make our new permanent home in Zihuatenejo semi ready. It's been great/interesting, all that jazz. We have been here 6 weeks tomorrow, Sunday.

We are taking cabs like crazy!!!!!!

On only one occasion have we been overcharged, and I saw it coming. We grabbed a cab at the south end of Playa la Ropa, and only took it as far as the delfines. Unfortunately, we told the cabbie that that was it. He said it was 30p, but my sweetie handed him a 50 and as I was digging for change he took off.

Honestly, we have probably had in the last 5 weeks, 60 cab rides, and only one that wasn't right on target, so all is well.

We have had MANY drivers who have actively assisted us with loading in and carrying up parcels and stuff for us, and have been thrilled to give them a tip.

Don't ever forget what a cab costs in other countries, and tip for extras!

Most of them seem to be pleased that we would leave California and come to paradise!

I can't blame you for trying to clear your name, but when we got into your cab the windows were closed and the A/C was on; I did not ask you to turn it on. I was not in a bad mood until you decided to overcharge me. I called you a thief, not a pickpocket. That was neither rude, nor aggressive, it was a simple fact. I did slam the door harder than usual, but since all other doors and windows were closed, it certainly didn't "almost break your door". As mentioned previously, your overcharging me didn't cause me any financial problems, I just don't like being taken advantage of. We use cabs frequently here in Zihua and this was the first time in several years that someone has taken advantage of us. When drivers help us with luggage or groceries, I always tip quite generously. In fact, I have hired 3 different cab drivers for other jobs. No need to return the money; it was a lesson learned. In the future, we will ask the fare before getting in to a taxi.

Thank you, José Manuel. I will gladly vouch for you.

My wife and I have known José Manuel for almost 30 years, and we've always known him to be extremely hard working and completely trustworthy.

It clearly states on my Taxi Rates page that A/C is an additional charge, usually more than José Manuel charges.

I hope both parties can forgive each other for any misunderstanding.

there are lots of transportation options in Zihua. I sometimes forget to ask about the fare to Las Mesas while in El Centro and maybe pay 15 to 20 pesos more than if I asked. At the end of the day its not worth getting worked up over it(75 to 90 cents). On the other hand if I asked the fare and then it changed when I arrived I would not be happy.

Always best to ask.

Last New Year's eve one cab tried to charge me 80 pesos to La Comercial when the fare should have been 42 pesos (30 pesos + 40% after midnight). We had gone about 300 meters when he announced the price of 80 pesos to me so I told him to left me off and I did get out. He tried to tell me that it was the tariff for cabs on XMas eve and New Year's eve. I don't see that anywhere.

After reading though the thread IMO the headline is a bit of a misnomer.

That the Taxi was accepted with the A/C on does not make this Cabbie a "thief" and personally I think for that reason this thread should be axed.

Getting in a Taxi is always "caveat emptor". That the Cabbie was not given an "no a / c por favor" and the Cabbie charging for the A/C at the end of the fare in no way makes the Cabbie a thief.

At worst someone may view the situation as "questionable".

On several occasions, we've gotten into a cab with the A/C on and were not charged extra, since it was already on. I assume this was for the driver's comfort. If you're hot, you can request and pay for A/C. I don't believe one needs to request the A/C to be turned off, in order to pay the regular rate. It is my understanding that the A/C add-on is 5 Pesos. Since he wanted 45, he was also overcharging the regular fare by 5 Pesos. Regardless of the relatively small overcharge - in US$ - I believe this translates into thievery. BTW, I have received 2 direct e-mails describing similar attempts at charging too much by the same individual. He has - kinda - apologized and offered to return the money. I was not bitching about the money; I was bitching about the principle. Hopefully, this is the end of a long conversation, which was originally just meant as a heads-up.

A/C is usually a 40% additional charge. That is what I have posted on my Taxi Rates page. José Manuel is known for going the extra mile, not for overcharging. It appears that you didn't understand the charge. Why you would mention you received 2 private mails bolstering your poor opinion of him is a mystery. If your anonymous friends had wanted the info made public they should have the courtesy to post and use their names. José Manuel's reputation is important to his livelihood. He has a large following of folks quite satisfied with his services on Facebook. Why do you insist he tried to take advantage of you if he actually charged you LESS than the going rate for using A/C? I had hoped you would refrain from accusing him after realizing you were not taken advantage of. I am disappointed to see you continue to do so. I love ya, man, but this time you are not being fair.

So here's my apology to Jose Manuel and anyone who got their knickers in a bunch because I posted what I meant to be a caution: I AM SORRY. On Christmas Eve after dark when cab prices go up, I hailed a cab to take me to the fiesta at my adopted Mexican family,s home. As we were talking he knew the family very well. I handed him 50 pesos and he gave me back 20. I said, oh no, it,s more in the evening! He insisted that for me, being part of his friend,s family it was only 30. I insisted back, the 20 was for his children for Christmas! Ok, he accepted it.

Another thing..I sometimes go alone to a beach other than Madera. What to do with my stuff while I swim? I look around for a nice family group and ask them would they kindly watch my bag while I swim? This always works well and they often ask me to join them. Reward: new friends!

Obviously, I love the generous, honest and kind Mexican people! That is my No. 1 reason I spend 6 months here every year! Vive Mexico !!
