They opened just over a year ago. They are owned and operated by a young couple in their late twenties early thirties not sure of exact age but they are doing a great job of quality, ambience and quantity.

El Manglar, the food, staff, owners, are all wonderful and as great as always.

We have moved up the beach from them, still on La Ropa and are missing having them across the street.

I am quite surprised that no one else has chimed in about this fine little eatery. Perhaps most turistas are still not aware of it? It is located on fishermans walk about halfway between the Zocalo and the pier. they are the ones that coordinated the gala dinner held at the Parthenon a year or so ago. Very nice food with an interesting selection. Plus some rather creative mezcal cocktails.

We just discovered Trattoria Gianni (LaRopa) this year. Food was great (went a couple times) and loved the atmosphere created in this outdoor setting. Gianni the man is quite the experience and a reservation is suggested.

Would that be a reservation for Gianni, or for his restaurant? Just kidding. Gianni is an entertaining and interesting fellow, and his restaurant is one of the gems of Zihua. Wish we were there to enjoy it.

reservation has nothing to do with how busy the place is it is a function of the expectation that everyone should have a reservation - even if the place is empty so it is more of an attitude love all the comments about eating Italian in Mexico I eat more Italian in Z than at home Don Memos, Il Mare, Gianni wish I had some now

I agree - - there are a few restaurants that I feel compelled to make a reservation because of wanting a certain table or server. It's also a guarantee that you will have a table at that particular time. One day a restaurant could be less crowded than the next - you just never know.

Of those 3 restaurants you mentioned: Gianni, Don Memos & Il Mare - - if you could only have 1 dinner, which would you select?

Don't forget Lety's coconut shrimp---she's part of the Chendo family and has a restaurant. If you go over the foot bridge at the marina and walk to your right a couple of hundred feet you will find it just on your left in the general vicinity where Punta Arenas restaurante used to be many years ago. Lety is a warm and gracious person as are other family members and staff. They always look for the opportunity to meet their customers with a great sense of humor and friendliness. I love the personal touch they all practice.

Pam, IMO you aren't missing anything. People are correct, Gianni is a good guy, the hospitality and service is friendly and the outdoor setting is very relaxing. That said, I had the lasagna and it was about a 2-3 on a scale of 10. Not impressive enough to warrant a return trip with so many other great restaurants in the area.

Ha! Fortunately, Arthur Avenue is 40 minutes from my home so this short drive saves me from round trip airfare.

Northern NJ & NYC have some of the best Italian restaurants this side of the mother land - in fact, we're saturated with Italian restaurants. We always try to source the "local foods" - things that cities and regions are known for. We've tried Italian in other US cities with "Italian sections" and most do not compare to NYC - ever have Italian in St. Louis?? The sauce is like jarred Prego. (no offense if that's what your palate likes) But have the gooey butter cake and fried ravioli and you'd think you went straight to heaven! ;-)

If I was in Zihua for 6 months, I could see the need to seek out "American comfort food." For me, personally, it's all about the local ingredients - fresh fish, fresh chicken, fresh pork, Argentinian meats, fresh veggies, house made tortillas....

This is why places like Agave & el Manglar are always on my list. El Murmullo is another restaurant that we've always gravitated toward....as well as Angelina's in Los Llanos (love Angelina's tacos!!!)

I'm glad to hear that Gianni has built a decent restaurant for those who seek out Italian food - but as I stated in my previous post....I would never think of eating Italian in Zihuatanejo.

"The last thing I want to eat when I'm in NYC is Italian food." Sound familiar?
"Local" Argentinian meats in Zihua? I'll bet you eat lots of the local shrimp.
You made a silly statement and now you're stuck with defending it.

I'm defending nothing. I stick by my statement that I never would have considered Italian food in Zihuatanejo considering where I live. Not one person who recommended Gianni's replied to my comment supporting their recommendation with a reason why I should eat there. One person commented that the food was still frozen in the middle. That's a strong enough reason NOT to go there.

Every region of the world has something common to the region. In Zihua it's the fresh fish - dorado and huachinango - combined with the local flavors. And yes, I know that the argentinian steaks aren't local but it's not something that we get readily in our local steak houses.

When people travel to NYC, they usually hit up Little Italy and Chinatown, two very touristy parts of Manhattan. Not that these are common food types, but they are the popular 'hoods.

You are a sorry soul to assume that I or anyone would think that the shrimp are local. Although there could be confusion for some with the "Gulf of Mexico."

You've got a good name, Holy Mole.....

We've enjoyed oir visits there in the past and are frequently bemused about him asking about reservations when it does not appear to be busy. Even when we didn't make the requisite reservation, we were always seated, at times a bit begrudgingly. The last time we were there, last winter the service had slipped a notch and we were actually offerred desert menus before the mains had arrived. I'm more than willing to give him another chance because the food is really good, the venue attractive and the priec point is reasonable.

Gianni’s does however need to cook the lasagna and parmigiana so they aren’t frozen in the center still. The tomatoe taste always bumps up when the food is cooked a little longer.
