Wanted:Weekly Cleaning Person

by Talley Ho @, Thursday, January 04, 2018, 21:25 (195 days ago)

OK, our house has progressed way faster than we ever though it would happen, and we are living in a mess. We need and planned for a weekly cleaning person.

Never having had one before, we need someone to come in and change the linens on two beds, and toss the towels and sheets into the washer and dryer while replacing them with the second sets.

We have two stories of tile and one of wood floors that need maintaining, windows, too.

We aren't slobs, but the tile floors are overwhelming us totally!

In a perfect world, we can have a person weekly forever who can take care of the basics for us.

We wash our own dishes, put everything away and have a weekly person who rakes, sweeps, waters, gardens and does general stuff.

In Perfect world, we would have a self motivated person who knew what to do. In real life, we need a person who can come in, do basic cleaning, follow directions, maybe water if things are done, and be trustworthy. For the right person, this is a forever job.

Any suggestions?

Do you speak Spanish or do you need an English speaker? Are you hiring with benefits (ie legally) Do you have a proposed budget for this?

Your "interview" starts off with a fairly innocuous question, and then turns just nosy & nasty. What? you've recently been appointed the employment police?!?

if a "quess" is all you've got, then skill improvement should be on your to-do list -- I'm guessing...

Hmmm, that seemed a little uncalled for. I thought the ad was honest and stated exactly what was wanted in a housekeeper.

if you're responding to me, then we agree on all points.

if you're responding to the Big Shot from MN, then you've placed your post incorrectly.

No Bonnie. I live here and know people who might be interested and those are the questions they would want answered and that those new to living in Mexico should understand. https://yucalandia.com/answers-to-common-questions/labor-law-for-household-employees-in-mexico-what-must-we-pay/B-)

you may live there, and it's my understanding that TH now lives there as well, and has been very visible on this board for years! IMHO, those last two questions weren't asked because you were doing your due diligence -- nosy & nasty they remain.

Bonnie, OlsenMN's questions are legitimate questions that interested employees would ask. I don't get your outrage.

Thank you Rob. We have just gone through the period when all the gringos ask in all the expat groups "How much Christmas Bonus should I give my housekeeper" and after ten incorrect guesses someone chimes in that there is no Christmas bonus but a legally required/computed aguinaldo with a link to the formula. Hopefully this info will keep someone out of trouble.

You don't "get my outrage" because simply, there is none on my part. It's my opinion and I think we are still allowed to express those here. OlsenMN implied that TH may not be attempting the hiring endeavor legally and wants personal financial info. In the very least, those last 2 questions should have been asked privately, not on the board. And according to both of you, the potential employees should be asking those questions.

A thought on how the whole thing should have been handled?? Perhaps OlsenMN could have extended an invitation (privately) for TH to take advantage of the knowledge in one of those “expat groups” meetings, that is IF TalleyHo didn’t already possess that knowledge. An offensive assumption or two made by OlsenMN in the first post – when it could have just as easily been handled with respect & politeness. You know, the innocent until proven guilty approach?

Your attempt to escalate the conversation to "it's all about that woman's outrage" has been duly noted. How about I have my hormone levels checked & locate my menstrual calendar – will that suffice?

While I appreciate your concern for "respect & politeness", there seems to have been a misunderstanding on your part. OlsenMN's inquiry to help someone she knows find employment is understandable, especially because I believe she has employed people and knows a thing or two about employment laws. I also believe your suggestion that those seeking employment should be asking the questions is unrealistic. I'd be flattered if locals who work as maids read my Message Board, but I have no such illusions they do. I hope you can understand that comments such as yours make folks reluctant to participate here on my Message Board, so I hope you'll show folks more tolerance in the future.

Saludos.

The person we have is great. She'll do what she thinks needs to be done, but you can definitely give her direction as well. She speaks very little English, but that hasn't posed any problems.

Contact us if you're interested.

Thanks for the referrals. We are meeting with one person tomorrow.

Yes, we are going to do this legally, and thanks for the link to the actual rules so we can be sure to do it correctly.

Unless a maid is employed full-time at one residence, I would assume that she works at several different residences and would, therefore, be considered self employed. This has been the case with several we've had over the years. There have never been any questions or problems. We tip generously upon departure and suggest that guests do the same.
