I hope you all will work out sharing public spaces with the artists and artisans who also sell their wares in Plaza del Artista (the name of the plaza where the Chili Cookoff is being held). It seems every year there is a conflict because the artists and artisans aren't taken into account or treated respectfully by Sailfest folks, at least that is how they have expressed the problem to me each year. They need to work daily to make ends meet, so it isn't convenient for them to take a day off or go elsewhere. Could you please explain to me the agreement you have with them?

If you're going to attempt to sling mud, you should at least endeavor to do so intelligently. "Squatters" are land thieves manipulated by politicians for their votes to occupy land that isn't supposed to be inhabited or for sale. Law-abiding long-time and native Zihuatanejo citizens including my wife pretty much all hold the exact same position as I do on the subject. What has proliferated out of control at Zihuatanejo's main plaza are the ambulantes, wandering vendors. Again, my point of view is shared by the majority of law-abiding long-time and native citizens especially including local business owners. Saludos.

I will be eagerly waiting your comments on what Sailfest is going to be doing with spending "their money" :stirpot:

Maybe you can allow Artista's to set up on your walk way for the day of the chili cook off! A win-win for everyone? YES?

Maybe our foreigners can learn to be more polite, considerate and respectful towards locals, as well as to give serious consideration to the advice that locals give. That shouldn't be asking too much, should it? Saludos.

That this "post" has brought out all this " craziness"!
This seems to be happening much too often!

All I wanted was to give people a chance to join
In the fun.
Rob,I would ask you to remove this post.
I don't have time for this "foolishness"
Thank you

Is it really that much to ask that the Sailfest folks find a place for their chili feast, which doesn't interfere with the artistas trying to make a living during the short few months when potential, foreign visitors are in town?

Plaza del Artista

We worked out an amiable solution with them. We invite them to participate in the Street fair (as we always have) during the Chilli event. As it is a very crowded space that day we ask every one to scrunch up a bit, chilli here, artists there. Most are happy to participate in Sailfest. Some have children attending the schools we help.

Some (the same two or three every year) just flat don't want us there - ever -for any reason. I wish there was a lovely 100% solution. Any ideas?

Thank you as always for having the courtesy to respond politely. An example your "fan club" would do well to follow.

It was just a simple question. I've heard the complaints repeatedly from my friends and neighbors and I thought you would wish to be aware of them, as apparently you already are. I hoped you would wish to avoid inconveniencing and affecting the livelihoods of people who already are struggling hard to make a living even if they aren't parents or cute little kids, and even it is only "the same two or three every year".

Saludos.

The Chilli Contest/Street Fair actually draws hundreds of potential customers for the artists, for some quite possibily their busiest day of the year.

The kerfuffle with the few who don't want us there may actually be our own fault. A few years ago, an overly aggressive volunteer did not address them with the respect they deserve. That may have poisoned the well a bit. Folks have long memories.

I should have added that things are steadily improving. Some of the artists are now active Sailfest volunteers.

Does this chili cook-off use the zócalo?
And the basketball court?

If not, why not?
