Are Ixtapa / Zihuatanejo still safe?

by Huck, Iowa...USA, Monday, January 08, 2018, 21:56 (12 days ago)

We have been going to Ixtapa for about 12-13 years, and have enjoyed our times there. We have always felt safe up to this point, but am worried about our next trip.

We like to go out for dinner & drinks in late afternoon or early evening, and are normally back to resort by 9-10:00 PM. We stay around the Crystal resort, and walk to dinner in Ixtapa,or take taxi(s) to Zihuatanejo. Always at least 2 of us,sometimes up to 8 in a group.

So what do YOU think? Are ixtapa & Zihuatanejo still safe places to go for vacation?

Thank you for your honest replies!!!

I strolled out of Ixtapa at 12pm last night. I did not notice people doing anything different than 29 years ago. If any indication of the amount of people coming here would of been my 1 hour wait to get through customs Sunday. Every indication I have says this is going to be one busy season down here. AND for the record people in Ixtapa said it was just nuts here over X-mas and New Years.

I know as one gets older it is much easier to become a scardy cat. But do YOU really think for one second that tourists here have some special mark? A bulls-eye? With the way the speed of information travels in this day and age if it really was a problem WE WOULD ALL KNOW. None of the 1000 or so people I saw last night had any special marks. I can let you know more in a week after speaking with more people.

you've heard of whats going on, the general state of unease among locals and expats and lack of rule of law. its clear as mud- there are other warm friendly latin destinations without this unease. this place will survive without you - it just depends if you want to come so far and relax and have a worry at the back of your head or go somewhere else and relax and not to have that worry in the back of your head. i just got back from zihua and i was so happy when i arrived back home that i could go where i wanted at whatever time and not have the anxious cloud that permeates zihua finally lifted from my back.

What gated community or bubble do you live in ?

Good point Juan. Besides, even if you do live in a gated community, that just gives you a false sense of security. If someone wants to get in bad enough, it's easy to do. Happens all the time in Arizona and Florida. Home invasions and cars getting broken into. Besides, eventually you've got to come out.

Hi Huck, It sounds like you are smart tourists like most of us. I would only add that I dont wear or bring flashy jewelry, don't carry lots of cash or credit cards..I actually wear a money belt and distribute my money in a few places, don't carry a fanny pack or back pack filled with expensive things I don't want taken from me. (I learned that one the hard way in Peru many years ago). These are things I would do anywhere in the world..okay maybe not in Alma Colorado but as a world traveler I've learned that in many poor countries...tourists are often easy targets for crime. I, personally, feel safe in Ixtapa and Zih...But I do pay attention to obvious silly moves...ie, out a bar until 4 in the morning.

I agree with the above. I carry my ID and the money I need for the day in a small plastic container, which hangs around my neck on a cord. The contents is a little easier to access than a money belt.

Huck I gotta ask......

Why are you worried about your next trip? I mean what has grabbed your interest right now, that has not been going on for the last 12 years that you have been coming?

Color me curious!

Perhaps the lack of police could be a key.

You are NOT here and that is not very fair. Quite frankly I have been here for two days and have seen PLENTY of police. Marines, Feds and GRO State Police. Also anyone with some time here knows the local police have never been worth a chit. Give me any of those three listed before the "local police" any day.

There is one person that posts here regularly claiming "no police" However if this person ever left his/her bunker and stopped waiting for police to drive by to count, they would realize there is police around. I am leaving the condo now and when I return from Z I will post how many police I saw.

It is safe as long as you don’t pick up a hooker, at 4 am, and then go back to argue with the pimp when it doesn’t work out. Alcohol has a strange way of making us forget those valuable lessons from Starsky and Hutch, don’t mess with Huggy Bear. Carlsbad has lots of ungated communities, and is a lovely place to live.

I walk frequently . During 4 weeks Nov/ Dec they were invisible. Morning , afternoon and night.
Had family visit from Mexico City and they noticed the Sherrif has left town.
I will be back for 6 weeks , maybe we go out and play where is Waldo ?
Maybe after a tourist died there may be a temporary presence.

So today, about 3 hours in Centro. 1 GRO state police rig in the Pemex station going to Ixtapa at least a 4 man crew. No one was seen walking with their hands in the air. I will say there seems to be good reasons for locals who live here to be concerned, especially if you own a business.

The first quote I will take as true from a Googled source.

The Zihuatanejo Police Department reports that there were 13 murders in the Ixtapa Zihuatanejo area in 2015 for a rate of 10.83 homicides per 100,000 inhabitants.

The second quote is from the last paragraph from the link below

The Ixtapa-Zihuatanejo area has seen an increase in violence due to disputes between rival criminal organizations. Sate security officials say there have been 112 homicides presumably related to organized crime so far this year in the municipality of Zihuatanejo.

This seems like a valid area of concern.

A related point to this discussion is that targeted assasinations in no way indicate ANY guilt by the victims. In this case I refer to locals. There was a 113th murder after the article. I'm told that a young man that I joked with every day at his job on La Ropa was also amongst these victims. I hope my source is wrong but his face was all too believable.

Our fully grown Canadian neighbor here on La Ropa let off some fireworks outside our wall that was accompanied by flashes of light. I have read on this board that an individual would have no idea what gunfire sounds like up close and I'm happy to tell you that would apply to me too. The echoed booms and flashes went and I wasn't frightened for ourselves but my heart sank for what I imagined had happened and the likely victims around us. I had a small moment of the fears that I'm sure many locals live with. Not debilitating fear, a mother's and father's kind of fear.

Surely SOME level of increased concern is warranted and is fair to be communicated without over stating and over reacting.

Hey JR! Nice to see ya!

Sure, concern. But personally, I have more concern for my friends that live there year round, than for the two of us as visitors.

As I have said in many other posts, up here we live in a much more violent/crime ridden society day to day than what I perceive Zihuatanejo/Ixtapa to be.

That's just my take on it. Others will have differing opinions.

Huck - we're staying on Playa Blanca but have recently gone to Zihua & Ixtapa via local busses. It was business as usual.

Just like at home, keep your head up & your stick on the ice and odds are you'll be just fine. ....JB
