Non Stop flights from Chicago...

I noticed today that after a LONG absence of DIRECT FLIGHTS from ORD Chicago to Ixtapa there are a few popping up, and not too expensive. Just Google any flight site. Non stop is the best way to go...cuts the trip from about 10 hours to just over 4.:-)

Volaris has a Sunday only non-stop. Reasonably priced.

With the uptick in travel warnings to Mexico, It wouldn't surprise me if you start to see a decrease in the fares charged by the Mexican carriers. The negative is that the US domestic carriers may schedule less flights after this winter season. But then again if that happens, the prices may all go up do to less seats available.

We also fly out of Chicago. We used Volaris going down to Zihuatanejo after Thanksgiving. We used Interjet coming home because we didn’t want a Sunday return.

Without a doubt, Volaris is the most cramped and uncomfortable airline we have ever flow. Ever. But it’s a direct flight and the price is right and we arrived at our hotel in time to unpack and make lunch on the beach so we call it it a very good bargain.

Coming back, we used Interjet. Very reasonable cost with a senior discount. The most comfortable airline we have flown in a long time. Nice leather seats. Plenty of legroom. Reasonable layover in Mexico City - enough time for dinner and a glass of wine. Both airlines had friendly service.

We really liked the Volaris/Interjet combination and are doing it again next month. We hope both airlines keep the current schedule. You have to be prepared for bare bones airlines but for coach passengers, even the big brands seem bare bones these days.

We have been booking the direct r/t from Chicago the last couple of years with United- Jan of last year we had to have our air miles reimbursed because of Kathie's fall. Our flight was at 7:30 am Saturday and touched down at 11:30 am. Our problem was we had our Immigration forms filled out at home but neglected to get the Customs because all the forms being passed out were in Spanish. We were one of the last on your flight leaving Customs because there were only 2 pieces of luggage after ours and finding a English form.
We love the 7:30 am flight even though we have to leave so early to O'Hare from our friends home.

I have been to Ixtapa six times from Chi to Ixtapa...inn the nineties and in the mid 2000's. The last three times there were ZERO non-stops...2005, etc. In fact my travel agent booked me a nonstop, then a week later it was dropped for some reason. Next, we had to use Milwaukee to get a non stop, which is a pain.

The morning to noon flight from ORD is definitely the way to go, and I have been on that flight. They seem more plentiful in Jan/Feb/March.

Sadly as a workout guy there will be no more bicycle renting and heading up onto the hill between Ixt and Zihua. 20 years ago it was crime free, and ten years ago, too. But now you'd have to be nuts to go.

I am not squeamish about safety, but do not go off the beaten path...as I'm sure you know.

Why do you not take the bike path between Ixtapa and Playa Linda? This route is used by many I know with out issues! Multiple time a week! PERIOD!

Midalake...

The bicycle routes of Ixtapa/Zihua are of course perfectly safe to travel. I've done it for years...from one end to the other...beautiful.

But I am speaking here of bicycling the remote paths up on the mountain between Ixt/Zihua. Past the Westin and way back into the desolate roads....desolate...and as I mentioned I am not fearful or squeamish.

Hi Terry

Quite frankly ANY of the land space between the Westin and Z, the so-called "back route" I have found to be safe ONLY in the last 5 years or so. I have told more than one taxi to not take that route or let me out. HOWEVER I have used that route at all times in the last 5 years. AND You should as well.

And my point in this response is: you should be able to bike that region without pause. Also if it is an issue as I mentioned there is the Z to Play Linda bike path, so there would be no reason not to enjoy a bike ride. Cheers!
