Time to See the Zocalo in DF?

OK you seasoned airline travellers and DF experts:
Aeromexico has arbitrarily backed-up the departure time for our flight from Zihua to Mexico City in early March by 2 3/4 hours, leaving Z at 3:30 pm instead of the originally scheduled 6:15 pm, arriving in MEX at 4:45 pm. Since our flight out of Mexico City isn't until 1:15 am, we now have some 8 1/2 hours between flights.
We've never been to DF (other than the airport) and have no idea how far the airport is from the Zocalo.
Question: Considering Mexico City traffic during the period from, say, 5 pm to, say, 11:30 pm, would there be enough time for us to grab a taxi or other ground transportation into the Zocalo area/Centro, have a meal, and make it back to the airport well in time to catch our 1:15 am flight? Any rough idea what a taxi would cost each way?
The alternative is to die of boredom in the airport.

Never having been to Mexico City, I can't answer your question. However, be sure that you take a properly licensed taxi into town, since a relative of a friend was robbed in a dark alley of everything, including his clothes by an armed fake cabbie.

About an 8 km taxi ride, 120 to 150 pesos.

You can take a subway from the airport. The subway stops at midnight. We had this same thing happen to us a few years back .. We took subway into Zocolo walked around , ate and took a double decker bus tour. It was a great experience.

The subway is a great idea. We were in Mexico City many years ago and took the taxi to See Frida's home. It is clean and well marked. Just be careful of pickpockets. Keep your stuff safe on your body. Also rush hour is packed wall to wall people.

Thanks to everyone. We should have remembered to check our trusty Lonely Planet. Incredibly, the airport is only 6 km from the Zocalo.....closer than Ixtapa is to Zihua. (Surely this is closer to "downtown" than any other major airport). According to LP, the Metro is "inexpensive and easy to use". That would seem to make the most sense. That, or an airport taxi (safer, apparently) into the Zocalo, and the Metro back.
Gracias.

Or Uber, I like them better than official cabs from the airport.

Be careful though about leaving enough time to come back. Even though it is only 6km away, if there are demonstrations (not too uncommon), traffic might be at a standstill. Fortunately, this not the rainy season because that is also a factor to consider.

The zócalo and downtown are spectacular, as I am sure you have read in your guides. Check for special exhibits at Palacio de Bellas Artes here. Even if there is nothing special going on, just to see the murals by Rivera, Siquieiros, and Tamayo it is worth the trip.

Enjoy your brief stay!

I went to D.F. last year and a friend I met up with there had an Uber account. I highly recommend it.
