Are there crocodiles in Zihuatanejo Bay?

We want to know if it is safe to get into the water in the bay while anchored there. We need to clean the hulls on our sailing catamaran.

Thank you for any information on the subject.

YES there are crocodiles trying to eke out a living in what's left of our estuaries at Playa la Ropa and Playa Principal and YES it is safe to get in the bay. You'll see hundreds of other people doing so without a problem.

Humans and saurians coexist quite easily as long as humans follow 3 basic rules:
1. Don't feed crocodiles. Feeding them teaches them that humans are a source of food. In Florida if you get caught feeding a gator it is likely that part of your sentence will be watching the gator killed by a wildlife official.
2. Respect their space. While saurians get along with other species in relatively close confines, they are especially territorial when guarding their brood or food. Also, when they enter or leave their estuaries don't stand on the beach between them and their destination as gawkers often do. They will see you as a threat.
3. Don't harass them. It's not uncommon especially for children to throw things at saurians because they want to see them move. This teaches them that humans are a threat.

I've never heard of anyone being attacked by a cocodrilo in Zihuatanejo Bay.

Rob was perfect!

We paddle daily off of Playa la Ropa. This year we have only seen tracks heading out to sea twice, sadly.

We have not seen a single one during daylight hours in the bay.

To add to that, there is a guy who picks balls from the lagoon at campo de golf Palma Real. I have asked if he ever got bitten, I was told he got a scrape around his eye, and that was it in 30 years. Guess they aren’t much interedted in us..

My husband's got a lancha/panga whatever you want to call them. His cleans his boat's bottom in the bay or where we're snorkeling, and so does every other boat you see in the bay, the lagoon and on the shore near Paseo de Pescadores. Yep there's cocodrilos, but they're usually out early and late and aren't cruising the bay looking for boat-bottom cleaners! Happy scraping!
