Legalize Pot in Tourist Areas

by Scott, Playa del Carmen, Quintana Roo, Mexico, Friday, January 26, 2018, 07:21 (30 days ago) @ Johnny Briefcase

Drugs are already openly sold all over the main tourist district here in Playa del Carmen. Right beside the police, no secret to anyone. Young, old, with children, they are shameless, anyone who doesn't look Mexican will get asked if they want to buy drugs.

Last year a number of these guys got shot. Some right on 5th Ave., in the middle of the day, in front of everyone. There must have been at least a dozen shootings either right on 5th, or within a block or two.

I love Playa, and Mexico, and still think this part of the country is much safer than most of the rest, but I really dislike the hypocrisy of allowing drugs to be openly sold here, when so much of the rest of the country has suffered immensely from the drug war. I would much rather that they legalize and regulate. But I don't see how it would work to do it in Quintana Roo & Baja California only. If they're going to do it, they need to do it properly. Not just allow drugs to be openly sold all over town here (like at present), while other parts of the country where the supply is coming from are terrorized.

Reduce violence?

I hardly think that just in legalizing Mota in Tourist areas would do that. Instead I can imagine even an uptick in violence as the Narcos compete for Corner Space.

Don't kid yourself. That nice tidy law signed by politicians in Mexico City has zero effect on the ground here in Guerrero or most of rural Mexico. If a cop catches you with any amount of green herb you are likely to get roughed up, robbed and possibly even tossed in jail where they will extort you before eventually freeing you. They may confiscate all your property if they feel like it, unless of course you happen to be related to or good friends with an influyente. Words on paper have little meaning in the lawless parts of the country.

You appear to be missing the part about why there is violence in tourist areas. In large part it's to control who gets to make millions of pesos selling to tourists and residents. Remove a large chunk of their market from them and their raison d'etre is also diminished.

I've advocated legalizing ALL popular recreational substances since long before anyone was able to have a level-headed discussion on the subject. Even before renowned economist Milton Friedman famously came out in favor of it in 1991.

But as long as there is profit in misery, there will be needless endless misery.

Well, first off, I have no dog in this hunt.
It does nothing for me. I'm one of the 33%.

Second, I think that it is short sighted to think that the Narcos would not be competing over Retail Space should it be legalized in the Tourist Areas.

It will simply look like the 1920s with Pot in the Speak Easy instead of Bootlegged Bourbon, and the very same Narcos will control it.

I am not advocating the prohibition, I am giving you a Common Sense View from the outside of the box.

What's the difference between a bunch of narcos and a bunch of two-faced vultures running the show? Oh, narcos in Mexico, trash talking vultures in Canada. I say vultures, because many of the big investors in marijuana companies are politicians. former politicians and those involved in the justice system. For example, Julian Fantino, former Chief of the Toronto Police Department and federal cabinet minister, has started his own marijuana company. He once likened legalizing marijuana to legalizing murder!! But he's not adverse to making pots of money off it! Former mayor of Vancouver and former premier of BC, Mike Harcourt is one of the principles of a major marijuana company. And the list goes on....
They are all up here, just rubbing their hands together in anticipation of the multi-millions they are going to make, just like the vultures you see waiting in the palms along Playa Larga!!! I hope everyone grows their own in their backyards and puts these blood suckers out of business. No use for those who persecute people for doing what they themselves now want to profit from.
Seems like the guy who just wants to have a few puffs once in a while, is stuck between a rock and a hard place.

True leaf is hardly a major player, they don’t begin to grow til April of this year. I suspect many individuals will grow, but hey, there are lots of folks who don’t care, it is still way cheaper than booze at retail. There are lots of folks for whom in big cities growing ain’t an option, grow plants in your back yard for 4 months only to have some kids steal them? I get your outrage, but it might be too early.

Some years ago, a guy showed me his hydroponic weed growing system on the top shelf of his bedroom closet. There were about a dozen blooming plants, about 4 inches tall, in Styrofoam cups. Quite impressive and safe from prying eyes.

We are getting ready to grow for research purposes at the university I work at in Nanaimo BC. Tilray Medical Cannabis started here about 5 years ago and have a large operation in Ontario and are now setting up operations in Portugal. I don't know who the principals are in this company but they must be making a killing. in order to expand the way they are.

I see that there will be a huge operation in the south Okanagan near Oliver/Osoyoos on First Nations land coming on board soon. Creating lots of jobs for our grad students and our enrolment has gone through the roof this year.

We don't necessarily teach students "how to grow pot". We teach them how to grow all plants, the science and technology around it. The knowledge and skills are transferable to any type of plant grown for food, forestry, ornamental and medicinal. There are other colleges and universities offering courses about the business and legal aspects of cultivating cannabis. We aren't there yet.

We will be doing research that the students will not be involved with for security reasons.

The large 700,000 sq.ft operation that will be built in the south Okanagan is the business venture of "Poplar Grove Winery owner Tony Holler who founded Sunniva Inc." They hope to create 200 full time jobs I lived close to his winery in Naramata for many years before moving to the Island.

Where I come from, people have been growing their own for years. When the "legal" thing is up and running, the grower has to sell to The liquor distribution branch (LCB) and then it is sold to a store/shop for retail. Now explain to me how this going to be cheaper than buying from a dealer or growing some?

Legalize Pot in Tourist Areas

by islandgirl @, Cowichan Valley, Saturday, January 27, 2018, 00:15 (29 days ago) @ Quadra Paul

They say people will be able to grow their own, but in order to sell to the gov't controlled store, you have to be a licensed grower. Chances are, if you have a criminal record, you can't get a license. So people who have been growing for years are being made redundant. Now that 'the man' has realized there's money to be made, said 'man' is taking control. Same thing as the narcos really, everybody wants control of the money, and they'll squish anyone in their way. One by fear and killing, one by legislation and 'justice.
BTW, I'm your neighbour, Islandgirl, so I kinda know what happens out here.

Right, I grow outside at home, the max lighting, I get, full sunshine i s 12 hours. Unless you are growing inside it’s never enough light. The weed I grow supplements what I buy, What I buy has about 18 hours before dropping to 12 to finish. No matter what I have never grown as good as commercial, unless under lights. I grow northern lights outside.

Anything that is grown inside, and under extended lighting has to be treated with pesticides. I'll take the home grown outside (in a green house)anytime!

Hard to imagine that you're more likely to need pesticides indoors than out. While I've never tried to grow weed in the house, or, for that matter outdoors, we've always had numerous other plants that have never required pesticides.

Legalize Pot in Tourist Areas

The problem apparently is that with most inside "grow ops" they grow as many plants as they can stuff in a space, which makes it all the more likely you will get pests, and those pests can proliferate and cause major damage! As for fungicides, if you see it happening on the buds, harvest the plant!

I absolutely think that marijuana and most other recreational drugs should be decriminalized and regulated. Prohibition does not work, has never worked and should be thrown on the scrap heap of bad ideas that we tried and proved doesn't work. It didn't work with alcohol, opium or any other substance. The only thing it does is create a space for organized crime to step in and profit from the misery and illness of those who are susceptible to the addiction. Did you know that states within the U.S. that have legalized marijuana, like Washington and Colorado, have declining problems with opioid overdoses?

https://www.washingtonpost.com/news/wonk/wp/2017/10/16/legal-marijuana-is-saving-lives-in-colorado-study-finds/?utm_term=.8fcd9fe560e7

Other countries such as Portugal have shown that treating addiction for the minority of the population that is susceptible to addiction while decriminalizing drug usage actually saves lives and takes power from criminal organizations. Even within the U.S. we have prime examples in the form of smoking and alcohol. Smoking has not declined because it is illegal, but because the U.S. pursued education and regulation.

I believe that it is folly to legislate against a thing or a substance. They are not good or bad in and of themselves. It is the possible resulting bad behaviour that should be legislated against. I don't care if you get stoned; but don't fly my airplane if you are. ....JB

Hey Paul - no disrespect; but I feel the same way about guns. There are literally hundreds of ways to maim or kill people without a gun. A gun is just a tool like a hammer. A hammer in the hands od a bad guy is far more dangerous than a shot gun in the hands of a responsible hunter. Again, it's the behaviour and not the thing or substance that needs to be legislated against. If you use a gun or a hammer in the commission of a crime, they should throw the bloody book at you. ....JB

A hammer is designed for, and intended to drive-in nails. A handgun or an automatic or semi-automatic weapon is designed for, and intended to intimidate and kill people. You don't seem to appreciate the difference.
