United does it again

by tay50 @, Sunday, January 28, 2018, 09:30 (261 days ago)

Received an email from United Airlines this morning indicating a slight change in our itinerary, an additional 10 hours to get home mind you. I have been coming to Ixtapa/Zih for 15 years now and always have taken the same flights and just about the same times every year. So now our trip is in jeopardy or will be shortened by 3 days. I know United will add back into their flight schedule our normal flight back to Detroit after we make all the changes. United works best for us flying out of Detroit, usually 7 hours down and 9 hours back home, which is why we use them. So much for booking 6 months early to get the hotels and flights we wanted. Not sure at this point if we are coming down or if we decide to come how much it will cost for changes to hotels and flights?

We had a similar situation with United. Flights we had taken for years changed and only way to get back home was a 27 hr flight zih to mexico city to ohare to DSM. I too thought they would maybe add back flights but never happened. Not many choices for us to travel to Z. Only option now is the catch a flight from Omaha. Could be worse - but miss the ease of flights from home, especially when we live 10 minutes from airport.

Always amazes we Canadians how your Airlines are focused on flying from city to city within your country but anything else is a form of torture and control.

We fly out of Detroit, trying to get a return flight through Chicago on Saturday the 10th, we will cut our trip short if we have to.

Next Saturday we have the direct flight to Chicago leaving around 1:30. The last I looked there were open seats on our flight home. We drive from Lexington, Ky to be able to take the direct r/t flight on Saturday. If we drive to Cincinnati for the United flight, there is a very tight schedule on the return flight to make the Cincinnati connection.

The same thing happened to me a couple of weeks ago on Alaska air. We ended up cutting our trip short by 3 days. Really makes me reconsider if next year is going to be worth it or maybe go somewhere more convenient.

I hope you took it up with Alaska’s Customer Service Representatives.

A couple of years ago, Alaska cancelled our flight and re-booked us on a flight which shaved a few days off our scheduled vacation. It wasn’t easy, nevertheless, when the smoke cleared, Alaska gave us a combined travel voucher for US$500, plus allowed us to stay a few days extra rather than shorter which was fine with us.

Alaska’s schedule changes over the past couple of years have made it much more difficult (if not impossible) to get down to a lot of places in Mexico out of Vancouver (YVR) without an overnight stay en route.

Last fall we left out of Seattle but the Alaska flight departs SEA at 5 AM which will get you to Zihua in a day, but is a pain and the return flight usually requires an overnight stay in SEA or LAX. Even one day flights flights to/from Bellingham (BLI) to Zihua are difficult to achieve with Alaska.

We are long time Alaska customers, use their credit card exclusively, have built up a lot of their air miles but are now looking at other options such as Westjet even though one has to travel to Calgary which requires an early morning departure out of YVR or Abbotsford (YXX) if one wants to get down in one day. We’ve also checked other flights such as Air Canada, AeroMexico and Sunwing but their times, schedules and prices are wanting.

Yes, I called customer service and was given two $125 vouchers, but that doesn’t make up for the lost 3 days in Zihua.

I would keep on complaining and going to the manager. We had this happen in September when they only flew out of Seattle on Friday's and Tuesday's. We had them send us to SLC where we spent the night and then we flew to Mexico City and down. We were about 30 hours later than planned so not horrible. After many calls and emails, we were re-imbursed for three hotel rooms, dinner, UBER, beach outfits (luggage was missing in SLC), make-up and more. It came to over $1100. We all got vouchers in the hundreds and 5,000 miles. It took time, but we felt it was alright. Oh, and we were on Delta planes going down and every seat has a tv on it for free movies and television.

The US$500 voucher we received didn't come easy either. Their initial offer was for around US$ 125 each but we felt it wasn’t acceptable.

It took a fair amount of work on our part to convince Alaska to come up with that amount and did so by pointing out how much of an inconvenience they were putting us through.

Without getting into too many details, we were dealing with two Alaska reps and one misinformed us as to the availability of a return flight on a certain day and that turned out to be a mistake on their part so they came up with the US$500.

The lesson we learned--- be firm, be fair and be reasonable…

Well we decided to overnight in Houston, I made the ticket change this morning, after the work issue was worked out. So now we just have to decide what hotel to book in Houston for the night. So I'm all happy again coming down for my 15th time, man I love the Ixtapa/Zih area. Maybe in 3 years after the wife retires we can spend a month or so down there with the rest of you lucky people. B-)

Since the merger with Continental, United has made it hard on us who are served by United at small air ports. Before the merger we had a 2 hour window between planes and now looks as if the plane we need leaves about an hour before arriving in Houston from "Z". One year we had to switch to the 3rd airport to keep from doing a overnight in Houston. We said FI and do the 6 hour drive to Chicago and leave our car with friends.

I think the original poster posed the question on one way flights From Zihua to Canada.

If you access the Westjet web site, you'll see that flights originating from Zihua (+ Cozumel, Maui, PV etc. for example) are priced in $US whether they are one way or return flights.

The last time we had to use Westjet one way from Zihua to Canada and booked via phone, they quoted our fare in $Canadian.

A little confusing but....

We are still have the AK card but are in the process of using up our miles. Once we burn through those, it's into the shredder. One's vacation should not be based upon which day an airline will get you to your location in a single day. We like to go near the end of October so that we can enjoy Dia de los Muertos in Mexico. To do so would have caused us to spend the night in LA. So we went on 11/3, the first day AK offered a flight that would get us to Z without said sleepover. As it was, we had to take a 6-hour layover on the return trip, that turned into 8+ hours. AK said they had to find a plane to put us on. WTF? Schedule a flight but forget that you'll be needing a plane? We arrived in PDX at 5:30 in the morning. Should have just stayed over I guess. For our trouble, we received $150 in travel vouchers, but only after the missus called and bitched. The companion fare is a joke, when you count what it costs to use it, along with the yearly fee.

Not sure why you feel the companion fare is a joke. It's $121 plust the cost of the card which is $75, so as long as you purchase a ticket that is worth more thanthat you save $$. We use one of ours for our trip to Z and usually save arond $300. We buy upgradeable tickets, so since we are gold, we are automatically upgraded to first class. We use the other for either a trip to Hawaii of the East coast and save $300 to $400 on those trips.

When United did something similar to us, I called them directly and said the change was unacceptable. The agent worked with me to get something that I thought was fine. The solution they found for me isn’t necessarily the one that would work for you but it’s worth a try to talk to someone.

A few years ago they changed the schedule for the flights between Lexington and Houston. To keep from doing a over night in Houston, driving to Chicago was our best option that the Rep helped us with and made all the changes for us.
