Barra de Potosi - Achotes Recommendations (Near the Airport)

Hello Everyone,

Me, my wife, and four other friends are traveling to Zihuat at the beginning of March. We are renting home on the beach right near the airport and we are unfamiliar with the area. We are very excited but looking for any recommendations at all regarding where to eat, drink, swim, fish, snorkel, or anything that you think is worthwhile. The biggest thing we are looking to hear from you is where you think we should drink and eat near there. We would be more than appreciative to hear your suggestions because we want to take as much advantage of our time there as possible. Thank you in advance.

Hope you rented a van or suburban with your friends. You are 20 minutes drive for groceries and restaurants. Everything pretty much closes after 6:00 pm in Barra and Playa Blanca. Some good restaurants on the beach in Barra but nothing fancy. Armando

I am partial to La Chula Vida, and when I want a little more upscale surroundings, Puerto Paraiso. At opposite ends of the beach.

"Every 30-40 minutes there is a pasajera from the aeropuerto to Barra, ends at 6pm"

I have never heard of this. Can you tell us more? Are you referring to a pasajera the same type as what you would ride from Los Achotes into Barra - ie, a covered pick-up? You can pick one of those up at the airport? Inside the airport parking lot or outside? What route do they take? Is it paved road now?

Get off the bus just outside the airport gate.
Walk about 30 feet and you'll see a spot on the right where you can sit down.
A truck will come by and take you to Playa Blanca or Barra.

If I understand you are staying 'real close' to the airport, so I'd recommend Marbella/restaurant/hotel. It's one of the first places on the beach road that leads down to Hotel Las Palmas and eventually to La Barra. It's close to the airport while all the other excellent suggestions are not 'real close." Marbella has a decent menu (the bacon wrapped shrimp are like the size of small lobsters) and a really nice pool. Check it out - it may be within walking distance of your rental home.

We have stayed in that area for two years running (maybe even the same house). There are a few restaurants within walking distance of the end of the runway, and as has been said, they close (stop serving food) around six pm. I don't remember the names if I even ever saw them, but they all do variations of the typical beach menu and I think they're all pretty good. A few more open up on weekends. The bus does run by in both directions (Potosi and Airport), but the 'schedule' is pretty loose. The road to the airport is paved, but mostly unpaved to Potosi - so it can be a rough ride, but it's only $13 to go the whole distance, less to/from where you're staying.

There is a store where the bus stops at the airport, and you can get some things there, mostly canned things, plus beverages of all kinds. The bus to centro leaves from across the street, and service is very frequent. Just be sure you get back from town in time to catch the last ride to the house or you'll be facing an way overpriced taxi ride. If you're in La Barra, you can get a taxi to the house for about $50 - 60, and it's worth it if you're tired.

You can email me privately if you want more information on the area.
